Exclamation Time/Distance between Regens

Does anyone know how the sensor for %soot in the DPF works. Mine used to run up to about 2.70 before it would go into a regen cycle. Now it hovers between 1.80 and 1.90 for quite a long time. The last 2 regens have occurred about 500 miles apart. The regen seems to take the appropriate amount of time and the % drops to about 1.06 before it shuts off (about 10-12 highway miles). I'm not complaining, mind you, but it used to happen between 250-450 miles. Any thoughts on the subject would be appreciated. I am using an Edge Insight to monitor.
Thanks,
BH

I know how it works.and yes they do start around 2.67 and usually stop around 1.25 +or - atad. If your going that far between regens, man be happy. You have a sensor probly lazy, kinda surprized CEL sint come on. Man id be tickled if mine would do that.lmbo

i also have seen this a few times. i think it has to do with how much passive regen is going on. have you put on more highway miles at higher speeds when it has done this ? i think that is what happened to me. went alot of miles on the highway and had alot of passive regen going on, but that only goes so far and then the system has to blow it out well with an active regen.

I am going about 500 to 700 miles between regen and 90% city driving in the dead of winter. I couldn't be happier. When I bought the truck new about 7 months ago it was going into regen about 75-150 miles. I did start adding PM22A cetane to every tank about 3 months ago so I do not know if that is making a difference.

My miles are mostly highway miles, usually 50 to 100 at a shot. I have about 21K on the truck and just noticed this happening the last couple of regens. I have taken a couple extended trips and the regens have occurred anywhere from around 200-450, but it generally varied, and I did see the %soot climb to around 2.70 before. Just the last couple of times it hasn't exceeded 1.90. I have had the Edge Insight hooked up since August and has included 1 trip from MI. to TX. and return. The truck runs great, and I have had no real problems to date.

A lot of it has to do with fuel quality, driving habits/conditions and load while driving. Good quality fuel burns hotter as there are more BTU's per gallon(which translates to better power as well). If you tend to be a heavier footed driver, run a lot of hills or run with heavier loads your EGT's will stay hot enough to do passive regens, which is what it sounds like is happening in your case.

I'm not usually heavy footed, keep it around 70, and get 18.5-19.5 avg mpg, and like I said this behavior seems to be something new.

I've seen various starting points for the Regen. I think there must be some maximum regen variable that says regardless of the Soot % an active regen must take place every so many miles ( or some variable) I've seen mine start a regen at 1.20% and clean down to .84%

Why would it start regen when you soot % is already near the point where most active regens terminate?

If I tow or work the truck hard, the Passive Regens keep the soot % really low, But the computer still seems to say, regardless of the soot % an active regen is required every X miles.

Maybe the soot has been burned off with Passive Regens and there is no need to try to burn it, But it still needs an Active Regen to blow the ash out of the system. I have no idea, But I have seen what you are experiencing where Active regens don't always start at the 2.74%. All the more reason I have quit worrying about it and let the computer do it's thing.

I've experienced the exact same thing lately. According to the Insight my regens would start like clockwork between 2.60 and 2.70 and run down to around 1.20. Recently however they begun closer to 2.10 and I've seen it burn it off all the way down to under 1.00.

About 60/40 highway to city driving. No change in mileage. Certainly not complaining, just a bit unexpected after 45K miles regening at the previous intervals.

Hey folks,

If you have concerns about your regen cycles, you can always make an appointment at your dealership so they can take a look. As always, you can download free copies of your Owner's Manuals and other important vehicle documentation at Ford, Lincoln or Mercury Owner, just select your particular truck from the drop-down menus.

No exact figures on this one guys, but I have noticed much less regen activity when the majority of my driving is highway ( or country roads) versus city driving. More idle time affects the regen cycle adversely also.

Also, the better the fuel, the less regens.

How do you find the soot %. I have about 570 miles on my new Superduty and have not noticed a regin. Will a light come on the display?

You have probably missed the notification. The first one or two regens will be far apart until the dpf starts to actually get soot starting to build up. The average though seems to be around 2-300 miles.
