The truth about the Cab Chassis

I am in the market for a 2013 or 2012 F350 C&C and I was just wondering about the reliability of them. I know they are not as reliable or as powerful as the pickups but I was just wondering just how bad they actually are. It is disapointing with how they de rated the engine.. I mean it is going to be less powerful than my current 7.3 with just a simple tuner on it.

I have searched about the valve issue and that seems to be only ones made during a certain range of dates and not that extensive. What I am worried about is the turbo issue.

Two questions..

Is there any way to get more power out of them without increasing the turbo issues? On another forum I heard that putting a tuner on them makes the turbo go even faster.

How extensive is the turbo problem?

Many happy C&C owners out there?

I've got a 2012 pickup and a 2012 C/C with a 9' Knapheid construction box on it. The power difference is quite noticeable. Where my pickup gets 16 - 18 around town the C/C averages 14-16. The C/C is probably carrying 4000 lbs more than the pickup. We've got about 45K on the C/C with no issues other than a squirrel nesting in it over Christmas break and eating some wiring.

Why would the cab and chassis be less reliable that the pickups? That doesn't make any sense to me.

They have turbo failures a lot more often than the pickups do.

And im wondering just how widespread the problem is

They have a different turbo than the regular pickups.

It still should have more power than your 7.3L ( 235hp vs 325hp) So unless you have really tuned your 7.3L with more than 100hp chip. the new cc 6.7L should still have more power than your older truck.

My advice is talk to 2 or 3 service bays at larger dealerships and see what the service history has been that they are seeing.

I have 70,000 on my 2012 F550 C/C, all of it pulling a 53' transporter. My turbo failed at 25,000 - haven;t had an issue with the replacement yet. I also noticed a substantial loss of fuel economy over my 2011 F450 pickup and the power loss is more than noticeable - it sucks. I needed the heavier drivetrain in the C/C, but I guess I'll be shopping for a class7/8, the loss of power and economy has really turned me away from Ford

Hi Jguck25,

As Painted Horse suggests below, I recommend that you reach out to the Service Manager at your local Ford dealership. They actually get their hands on these vehicles and can best speak to your questions about reliability and performance.

Great advice, Painted Horse. Thanks!
