A 5 gallon tank won't fit under the hood. There's barely room for air! If the filler were located under the hood, it would have to be a really long fill neck, cause i don't think a 5 gallon tank will fit uder the cab either.

Excellent observations. I also think we are putting way more thought into this. The proximity of the SCR catalyst, the DEF tank and the filler neck from an engineering stand point makes the most sense. Right? Aside from that I seriously don't think it is going to be common for people to confuse the two clearly labeled, filler openings and caps of different size and color. Yeah, statistically there are one or two knuckleheads that will somehow screw this up... but that is what the Darwin awards are for.

DEF is +12F freezing, BUT PowerstrokeHD said there is a winterized version of the DEF to like -20F
I'd probably buy it in gallons too. I don't like the idea of the stuff spilling down the paint (or worse, getting under the fill neck and eating the sheet metal out from the inside).

Whats different in the winterized version?

And while you can't make everything fool proof, I've learned that fools don't need any built-in help to be fools, either. Of course, before I went to medical school I did a lot of human-factors engineering in the aerospace industry, on projects like the B1 Bomber, AH-64 Apache helo, and the like.

DEF Freeze Point

Freeze point for DEF is 12 F according to all info that I have seen from Detroit Diesel /Daimler.We do have engine coolant run through def tank for heat & all def lines & metering unit is heated by current. This system has it's own control module (ACM) Def Is 33% ammonia the rest water.

Seems like a logical place to put it... If anything at the least a newbie to diesels would see it when the filled up. Under the hood maybe not.

I, too, agree that I would keep gallon jugs at home. At least until I saw the DEF WIDELY AVAILABLE at gas stations. Probably would keep it topped off. I would hate the get the LOW DEF message and not be able to find it.

I can't wait for the trucks to get into the diesel enthusiasts hands so that I can read about real world experiences with Ford's new motor.

Most Auto Parts stores will start carrying it I am sure. O'Reilly Auto Parts is brining in a line called Blue DEF for this application. I am almost sure that WalMart will start carrying this as well... probably in a WalMart (SuperTech) Brand...

It's already at the Flying J's. I saw it there a couple of weeks ago in gallon jugs. I can't remember the cost, though.

Anybody know the difference in cost between DEF and the absorbing catalyst used by some others in the long run.

Inevitably someone is gonna run out and not have any immediately available. Lets say they added something to this tank to try and make it wherever they are going. The PCM will probably know the difference as the NOX emmisions are too high(as stated earlier in the thread.) But will it hurt the truck, clog the DPF? Or will just the emmisions be bad for the environment?

No but it will hurt the owner's pride after he neglects the MULTIPLE warnings on his dash about the DEF level then the stepped down power finally resulting in an engine that will only idle. Nobody in that situation will be able to say they weren't warned. Oh, but you likely will be charged to remove and drain what ever piss you put in it.

If someone puts the wrong stuff in the wrong filler neck he deserves the already super high insurance premiums he already has from all the other stupid things he has done.

I was in a NAPA store a week back and they were sorting out a shelf for their just arrived DEF. It was in gallon jugs and a triple 1 gal jug pack.

On this DEF/diesel mixup that everyone is discussing, lets not forget the human factor here. In the boating world, I have seen people put fuel in FISHING ROD HOLDERS on more than one occasion! One incident didn't get noticed until the bilge pump kicked on and started pumping diesel(fortunately) overboard. By then there were tens of gallons in the bilge, can you say expensive? These were not all idiots, some were owners who were rushed and distracted. I hate to say it, but there will be people who put the DEF in the fuel tank thinking its a fuel additive like we 6.4 owners are supposed to use with every fill up. Mark my words, its gonna happen. A seperate door for the DEF would have been a good idea.
I'm not busting on these trucks, I may trade my 08 on a new one in a few months. I'm just pointing out that stuff happens.
About ten years ago a very large expensive home burned to the ground because the owner, angry that his wife had filled the gas tank on her van that was to be traded the next day. At midnight he went to the garage to siphon the gas. It wasn't going fast enough so he used his wet-dry vac to speed up the process! You can guess what happend next, can you say flame thrower? A friend of mine was the fire chief of the first company that responded and he said the guy couldn't beleive that would happen. He said the guy told him "it said it was good for wet or dry use"! BTW the guy was a prominant local businessman!
