I don't post to often but saw this and and thought I should.
Basically Ford looked back at the concerns that existed with the 6.0 and the 6.4 and decided to design there own engine to avoid the past issues. The problem with using another companies engine that was designed for medium duty use is that you're stuck with what they make. Ford figured that since they are a motor company, they could be design avoid the past concerns. I've attended a lot of the dealer meetings and spoken with a few of the engineers and that is what I have walked away with.
Just my .02

The 6.4 was more expensive all the way around, it sucked fuel like crazy and for anything major the dang cab had to come off the truck. It needed to go away. Ford redesigned this new motor with fuel economy and made everything functional and more accessable. There was no way the 6.4's design was going to get the fuel mileage that this 6.7 is reportedly getting and I also think Ford wanted to prove that they could accomplish a lot of things that International said couldn't be done. You CAN have tons of power and STILL get great fuel mileage while STILL satisfying the many emmissions requirements. If this motor is as good as Ford is advertising, it is going to be the motor of choice....possibly trumping the cummins. I've said it many times on this forum, I wish ford would design and build 2 different diesels, a straight 6 (similar to the cummins) and a V8 (6.7) and let the customer choose which one they want.
I like the simplicity of the straight six diesel but they are not as smooth as the V8. My direct experience with the new Dodge Cummins, manual tranny, cab chassis is that they too suffer for mpg. Less than 11 mpg from N. Alabama to N.M. and back 99% highway at the posted limit. The same trip in my 02 7.3 averaged 18.5 mpg. The cummins has good low end tq but is not big on power over 60 mph. It looks like the new 6.7 has the peak TQ at 1600 rpm and with the double overdrive tranny it may be more efficient and have less parasitic drag. Also it appears that the new TQ converter stays locked more, lower rpm, less friction, lighter driveline, good low end TQ, ummm, maybe 18 mpg on the road @ 70 mph!

Sherman, there must have been something wrong with the dodge you drove out to New Mexico, the one in our yard gets about 11 MPG too but it has a huge enclosed contractors bed on it, we bought it used and I swear there is something wrong with it because it's a 24v and it has very little power but all I ever hear out of cummins owners is how they are getting 22+ MPG an BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH. I would be willing to bet that if Ford could get 20+MPG out of a V8 diesel then they would be able to do a ton with a straight 6 style motor too. I love my 7.3 and 6.0 but I would be all over a ford built straight 6.
Hey lari, I should have added that we were pulling a trailer with a Kubota RTV 900 on it when I checked the Dodge 6.7 MPG. Yes I too like the simplicity and design of an inline six. One can actually look down and see the ground through the engine compartment of the dodge. I am not bashing GM or Dodge but IMHO Ford has the best truck on the road. If the new 6.7 is as strong, efficient and reliable as advertised then it will be a winner and attrack the non-brand loyal buyers for sure. I know that Ford is in business to make a profit and not satisfy the wants of a few like us who like manual transmissions, simple, torquey, efficient rides.
