I think I've even read some reports of 8-10 unloaded before with the outgoing model.

I hear ya though on the rest. I've never had problems with this 6.4 we're in now, but the previous one was bought used and had it's problems. It would be great to hear the 6.7 turn out to be reliable and earn just as high remarks as the 7.3 over time.

Mileage is why I didn't go to a 6.4 when lease was up. Bought the 07 and played the mod game (won't go into that here). If the mileage is there then I will be too in a year or so.

I'm one of the few that got really lucky with 6.4 mileage. I get 15-17 pretty consistently and around 13 towing.

What are you towing?

I'd be thrilled with 13 mpg, don't think I even get that going downhill.

16ft flatbed, usually loaded down with granite and tools. A few weeks ago we hauled a 12 car hauler with a '98 Dodge Ram with a GVWR of 6500lbs. If I remember correctly, when we got back into town, we were showing 11-12mpg.

That's still good in my book. I think my biggest issue is wind drag, trailer has the aero-dynamics of a brick.

That's a SRW with 3.73 gears going between 65-70 with RPMs at 1750-2000.

You also probably take care of your truck and drive it like you want good fuel mileage.

Some folks hot-dog these trucks & tune it to high heaven, and then complain about the fuel mileage and reliability.

Ford is claiming 18% improvement in mileage over the 6.4 so I wouldn't expect more than that in the real world.

Oh yeah, it gets a shot of Motorcraft cetane booster with each tank and stays as close as possible to the service intervals (although this last one was a bit of a stretch). I also like to play a game of high score when driving. Just put the info display on the MPG counter and try to get it as high as possible. Flog it when you need to, take it easy when you don't.

I like to think that I take care of mine. May not get washed as often as it should, but oil is changed every 8000km (approx. 5000 mi), filters are changed as per manual, trans has been serviced, so has diff and transfer case. Always run quality fuel from major stations (Esso in Canada would be same as Exxon in the States). I also run Power Service diesel conditioner (grey bottle), tried the Ford Cetane booster but seemed to get better mileage with the Power Service. Yes I have played the modification game, but am not exceeding the ratings of the engine (according to programmer). I did the modifications to try and improve mileage when fuel hit $1.65 per litre (approx $6.35/gal). I am not running any programmers right now and get 10-10.5 (using the dash computer) carrying 3500 lb in bed. Best towing mileage I can remember is 10 mpg.

The only way an 8000 lb truck is getting 30 mpg is if you don't count the fuel consumed in the tow truck towing it.

Man I really hope the new engine is reliable and more fuel efficient. But I would have to see it myself to believe in anything more then 21 mpg in a vehicle that weighs what these trucks do and is as capable as they are at working......

LOW SUPPLY always on first year vehicles-NOT NEW!!

However, it seems to be more with supply/demand issues. With many of the F-250/350s used as work trucks, and the economy taking a dive (especially in contruction where these trucks are used), I think the dealers are trying to avoid ending up with trucks that sit on the lot forever

We used to also keep a couple 450/550 dumps on the lot, but not recently.
Gentlemen:
This is not anything new from the past. First year model year changes by Ford and Especially GM are always this way---they know that there are certain people that are the type that have to be the first on the block to have one. So supply's are limited.
The 2003 6.0 litre had NO rebates and very few dealers were going to give up their low allocation (due to the limited supply)to even X-plan pricing.
In 2004 they offered $4,000 rebates and had no problems giving up X-plan pricing. Remember X-plan is not a right. It is still up to the dealer depending on their supply. The 2008 model 6.4 was the same. As far as the deals on 2010's. The same held true with the 2007 6.0 litres---alot of great deals then too.
Wait till late 2011 models (june-dec of 2011) and 2012 models and the rebates and incentives will appear. That gives Ford about 16-18 mos to build their profits on this new 2011 model. Of coarse the MSRP will go up some in the meantime.

I hear many people on this forum that have 11's on order have negotiated x-plan or invoice. I agree with you in general on your statement above, but when you factor in the economy it swings back the other way a bit. These dealers are just happy to be selling a $$50K + truck.

Easy answer is to find a hungry dealer.

I found a dealer that would go below invoice and x-plan on my PSD Excursion, when the "high volume" dealer wouldn't budge from just below MSRP. This one was primarily a car dealer and the fleet manager was happy to sell a vehicle that Ford "forced" on them. (He wouldn't give as good a break on an Escape, so I would have to go someone else if I wanted one of those. ) They didn't have an F250, so for that one I found a high volume truck dealer - they made it worth my while to drive 200 miles each way to get it.

I have seen several sponsors here offer decent deals - my only issue is that I don't think I could live further away from them and still be in the continental US. By the time I factor in shipping or flying to get it, my savings is gone...

It will be hard when the 2011s first hit to get an outstanding deal, but a good deal can be had with patience. I consider a good deal at x-plan without a dealer fee. A great deal is below x-plan (This of course assumes you can't get the A/D plan)
