Buying out of state and X plan question

I have an X-plan pin and am looking at buying a truck in NY and driving it to GA where it will be registered. The dealer doesn't seem to want to get involved as it is also an X-plan buy. What exactly is involved here since I obviously won't pay NY sales tax as it will be registerd in GA. Can I get a temporary transit tag?

Also wanted to know if the x-plan bonus cash is still 1250 dollars or did it cahnge after the 2nd of January. Thanks for the help.

The dealer should give you a temporary in-transit license plate good for 30 days or so. As part of the paperwork, be sure you get the original copy of the MSO (manufacturer's statement of origin). You don't pay any TT&L to anybody in New York.

Before you pay for the new truck and leave the dealership in your new rig, verify to 100 percent certainty that the VIN on the MSO matches exactly the VIN on the pickup.

Since you won't be paying a "documentation fee" to the NY dealer, then you have to handle all the paperwork yourself. Check with the office in Georgia where you will process that paperwork and pay the TT&L fees, but more than likely it will work something like this:

You pay the NY dealer for the X-Plan price of the vehicle. Get all the paperwork - mainly a bill of sale showing exactly how much you paid for the vehicle, and the original MSO. Then head south and get home before your temporary license plates expire.

When you get home, go to wherever you have to go to get an inspection sticker for safety/emissions/whatever GA requires. In Colorado a Sheriff's deputy had to certify that the VIN on the vehicle matched the VIN on the MSO, so perhaps GA does something similar. Then take all the paperwork to the county or state tax office where you normally would obtain license plates. There you will pay the TT&L, apply for a title and license plates, etc. Be ready to write a big check for the TT&L - In Texas on a $40,000 pickup it could be $2,500 to $3,000.

Re: Buying out of state and X plan question

You will probably need to research the Georgia state tax laws to find out about if they will not make you pay Georgia state sales tax when you register it there.

Where I live the state will require their sales tax, regardless of where you bought it, even if you paid sales tax elsewhere. If it's used, they get the equivalent of 'property tax' every year when you get your license, so you can't claim it's used (unless it has over 6000 miles on the odometer), as a way to keep people from buying in Nevada with no state sales tax, and then driving across the border.

Re: Buying out of state and X plan question

GA tax 5% plus the LOST (county local option) of 1-2% plus $18.00 title fee will be paid when you get to your county tag office. Up until 06-06 you could pay or wait and the state will send a bill in 4-6 weeks, now it pay before you get your plate. Some surrounding states have an agreement to collect taxes at time of purchase and forward them to GA, but it will be the 5% state tax and you will still have to pay the local option taxes to the county. You will NOT pay ANY sales and use tax to NY. As said already, make sure you leave with the MSO in hand and make sure it matches the VIN. Although you are covered by insurance on a new purchase for X days, I always call my agent during the purchase transaction anyway.
