Dealer Option - Special Wax & Scotchguard type leather protection

Dealer has asked if I want to add a 'special wax' for the exterior and a Scotchguard like application for the leather interior. He wants to charge ~$800 for this.

I haven't heard of this 'permenant wax' before. According to the dealer it is supposed to help cure the paint and smooth the orange peel effect of new paint.

Does anyone have information or knowledge they'd care to share?

What does it do and is it worth the money?

Thanks much.
As always.

P.S. Haven't seen the truck yet. It's been sitting in the Railyard 80 miles away for a week now

I bought the polishing thingy for my car, but it goes in twice a year for three years for about the same money.

Re: Dealer Option - Special Wax & Scotchguard type leather protection

I thought this goofy scam died out in the early 80's. Paint sealant, undercoating, fabric protection. More than likely the shop gopher will take about 1/2 hour to spray an unknown substance all over your new seats and carpet, than apply a silicone sealer to your new truck's painted surface, and maybe he cleaned the surface before rubbing this also unknown product on. For that, your bank account is $800 shorter. Smile and say no thanks. Go to the grocery store and buy a can of ScotchGuard(the real stuff) and apply a couple of coats to your carpets, Macquires sell a very good leather cleaner/conditioner that takes about a hour to apply, and then take a nice early morning to wash and wax your shiney new truck. Now it will be protected, you know the job is done right, it may cost you $25, and you got some excersise out of it to boot.

You will also find that the dealer will hand you a small bottle of conditioner that you need to reaply to the paint every couple of months to keep the shine. Just buy some quality wax and do it yourself, or take it into a detailing shop and give them a couple hundred dollars and let them do the pollishing and cleaning. As the others have said it is just another way for the dealer to get your money.

For $800? that's nuts....I'll wax and protect your truck inside and out while you sit there and watch me,but when I'm done while you still sitting there I'll take your truck to have lunch,if I'm real hungry it may take awhile to return...
Luckly for you I'm across the Pacific from you...

Re: Dealer Option - Special Wax & Scotchguard type leather protection

I was forced to buy this in 1997, it was added in the contract, it was sold under the name "Perma Plate". I leased the truck, and the bank required it. Well it is exactly as the above post said, a wax job, cheap undercoating, carpet and seat protectant. Well its been 10 years, and I still own that truck. I have not noticed any special shine to it, and the carpets and seats got just as dirty as any other truck I have had without it. It also took away the new car smell, and look. The upholstery protectant was applied with a carpet cleaner, so it was like having the seats cleaned, and that's where it lost the new smell and look. I would never do this again. Do like the above post said, and go buy your own stuff and do it yourself, or just save your money and put some away for a nice detail job every 3 months or so...IMHO

Re: Dealer Option - Special Wax & Scotchguard type leather protection

I'm bad, I tell them that I will gladly pay for it if they will sign a contract with me to do it for half of that. That way, since it is so expensive, their profits will go up. The usual line is that they can't take it off once it is on, and I always tell them that it doesn't need to come off the truck, just the price.
