Any one out there have any info on this new tax starting in Jan 07 for buying a new diesel truck? Dealer is saying were going to be paying around 5k more for a new diesel truck.

This should probably be in the "ordering info" forum, but ... He is probably referring to the increased costs of diesel engines due to the knew emissions requirements. I have heard the $5k number tossed around, but no one is going to know for sure until the order info comes out later this year.
I haven't heard of any new Federal taxes on diesel vehicles. Of course, I don't try to keep informed on state taxes or local taxes.
But the Feds do have new emissions requirements effective with any diesel vehicle produced beginning January 1, 2007. Those EPA requirements are going to be very hard and expensive to meet. International announced several months ago that they will probably have to raise prices on their trucks by around $10,000 per truck in order to pay for those new EPA requirements. I haven't heard a peep out of Ford yet, but I expect the price of 2008 PSDs to increase by at least $5,000 because of the ultra-low-sulphur diesel requirements and the tougher EPA emissions requirements.
There will be all sorts of junk added to the exhaust system. One Mercedes diesel schematic I saw showed three different kinds of catalytic converters, plus a particulate (soot) filter as well as the muffler. On the good side, that might have a positive impact on resale someday for pre-08 diesels....

If it really is a $5000 jump, you might not have to wait long for "someday"!

Think positive! And the sticker shock may not seem so bad.
Today a fancy PSD pickup can easily have an MSRP of $50,000 with only Ford factory options. Tomorrow it will have an MSRP of $55,000. Ten percent. Big deal.
But the green-eye-shade MBAs who make decisions for the larger fleet purchases might have to run the numbers twice before spending $10,000 for an optional diesel engine. Ford's V-10 sales may jump up for a while at the expense of PSD sales to smart fleet customers who need the towing and/or hauling capacity of a SuperDuty pickup.
How many people here have pd 55 grand for there home?
Will have it for 50 plus years!
bet none of our trucks will last this long
granted I am sure many people have spent WAY more and some less
But ill bet many of the folks on this board have pd close to 55 grand for there home?
What r we to do
Guess if we want the big rigs we have to pay the bucks!
My first 3-bedroom house in the suburbs cost me $9,995 in 1965. It was only a year-or-so old. That same year I bought a brand new '65 Corvette Stingray coupe for $3,650. The car had only two options: 4-speed manual tranny and Positraction. Yes, Virginia, back then a 3-speed stick was standard on a Corvette. Base price MSRP was $4,250, but I got a good deal direct from GM's overseas division that sold to military personnel returning home from overseas.
Who benifits by "priming the pump" on excessive "guesses" on the up coming diesel option price? Wait and see the facts, guess about Oct/Nov for early orders?

It's not guessing. International executives stated it as a fact last fall.
" Prices for International mid-range diesel powered trucks and IC buses are estimated to increase $5,000 to $6,000 per vehicle while for International Class 8 truck/tractors with supplier engines, the estimates range from $7,000 to $10,000. Additional charges will apply with certain engines where higher horsepower requires dual after treatment. "
"Supplier engines" in International Eagle OTR tractors include Cummins, Detroit Diesel, and Caterpillar.
Smaller Cummins and Caterpillar engines are also available in Ford F-650 and F-750 trucks, so if you need one of those "cheap", now might be the best time to buy one.
Ford price increases should be around the same ballpark as International's, so a $5,000 increase in prices for 2008 models is not a WAG.
But they haven't announced prices yet, so nobody knows for sure how much they will take out of their hide and how much they will pass on to their customers.
(In case you don't already know, "IC" buses are International school buses and some commercial buses produced by IC Corporation, which is another wholly-owned subsidiary of the same folks that own International Truck and Engine. IC is the biggest bus manufacturer in the country, as they make most of the school buses sold in the USA.)
