do i need dual alternators

Hi, getting ready to order a new f450 and am trying to sort out which options I need, like dual alternators. I will be towing a 40' custom aluminum gooseneck with 8 foot living quarters around 22k gvw. It has all LED lights which i think are supposed to draw less power. Being 40' it has a lot of lights. In cab I use a cell phone charger and inverter to run my coffee maker(just hate that flying j coffee). I'm thinking a heavy duty should be enough. Any comments would be appreciated. Chris.

Re: do i need dual alternators

I would recommend you go with the HD (140A) version vice the duals. Your load really isn't that much compared to say...an ambulance, with its huge power draws for equipment and inverters, which is more the market duals are aimed at.

The best deal on the HD alt is if you go with the "snow plow" pkg. You get the alt, heavier duty front springs and a more agressive fan clutch (will help with cooling when towing). You get all this for $10 more then the price of the alt alone (assumes x-plan pricing).

I could be wrong but I seem to remember a thread (might have been over on the RV board though) about people having problems with burning up one of the duals from running too light a load.

Just my $.02, but if I had the choice I would go for a HD Single alternator. I just prefer the KISS principal.

Re: do i need dual alternators

Looks like I'll be getting just one alternator anyways. I found out today Ford is no longer taking f450 2007 orders. I don't want to be a test pilot for the new 6.4 and have no way of knowing when it will be ready. My dealer found a 4x4 450 crew lariet with the manning pickup bed, gooseneck, and the exact options I wanted. Not my favorite color, but I can live with it. My only worry is the height of the bed rails and the snow plow prep springs. My new trailer, which I havn't seen yet, is supposed to be built with todays taller trucks in mind. I think this truck will be about 4 inches taller than my 4x4 350, which i hope leaves enough space when I go through a good size dip or rise when I'm off highway. The other item is the front heavy duty coil springs. Anyone have a 450 with them? Chris.

That does make the question irrelevant doesn't it. Man,they sure cut the 2007 MY short. It's just barley is past mid 06.

Can't blame you for that. This most likely will be my last diesel. With the ever increasing amount of filters, sensors, scrubbers, converters and electronics they have become no more reliable than a gas engine. Add to that the price of ULSD diesel is higher than regular gas and the premium for a diesel most likely will go up to the $6K~$8K range it just won't make sense for someone like me to spend that kind of money.

Have a great time with the new truck.
