Dual Alternators. YES or NO?

I know this will be a matter of opinion on the issue. The $250-300 is not a issue. I am looking for the Pros and Cons. Does this affect fuel mileage? Will I need it for a Travel trailer? Is it intended for any particular use? I am leaning toward going with it (better safe than sorry) just tell me why not.

Thank for the feedback.

I have only been looking in for about two months so forgive this ROOKIE question. Who is Joe K? I have seen him referred to but not read post form him.

The info you guys have is great.

Re: Dual Alternators. YES or NO?

If you are getting the diesel engine you have 1 130 amp altenator charging 2 batteries...now if you put a travel trailer on you will be charging 3 or maybee 4 batteries on a single altenator...It will make the altenator while charging, it will become very hot...I would go with the dual altenators..it will be more efficient and they will run cooler...as for mileage the diesel won't even notice.....

Joe K is Joe Kiess. He works for Int'l at the Indy PSD plant. Knows the PSD in and out. TONS of valuable info on both 7.3 an 6.0. He was a moderator for the 6.0 board at www.ford-trucks.com.

Unfortunately, he is a Union guy and very outspoken against Int'l management. He also took a couple of swipes at Ford. Someone got to him and gagged him. Apparently they threatened to fire him. So he no longer posts.

Do a search in the archives at ford-trucks under the username "The Diesel Dude" and you can read some of his wisdom.

A very, very sad result.

You may also see comments about Mark K. Mark is a transmission engineer at Ford's shop in Livonia, MI. Knows the TorqShift and 4R100 like the back of his hand. Someone must have gotten to him too. He no longer posts anymore either.

Re: Dual Alternators. YES or NO?

If you asked me this question a month a go I would have agreed with Sam .. 1 alt, less to worry about. Lots of people will say this is a setup for emergency vehicles only. Lots of lights and radios. To pull a trailer you probably wont need the extra alt. But think about what else is going on besides pulling the trailer.

I had same concern about fuel mileage, HP reduction and reliability. After doing endless research and asking several Ford techs their opinion and reviewing several posts on this subject and specs on the alt’s, I have changed my mind. Alternators will run at a 80% efficiency and that 130amp will put out about 112 amps. Do the math and see if that’s enough for you. I pull a 33’ fifth wheel with 2 house batteries. With the headlights, cab lights, radio, nav system, air, trailer brakes and lights, brake controller, lights and accessories (fridge) inside the trailer, 4 batteries, air bags and whatever goodies I plan to add, the single alt “might” handle it but it would sure work at max capacity. The dual alt set up on the 6.0 is different than the 7.3. It has a separate belt for the second alt. I like that as opposed to having one big long belt. I went with the duals.
