Has anyone participated in the discount program Ford has for relatives of employees? If so is it really a good deal or just smoke and mirrors? I'm told anyone can get the price down to the same amount if you haggle. Would appreciate opinions good/bad about the program. I think it's called Plan x. Thanks in advance for always great responses.
Ken
The discount program is called the A plan. What is nice about this program is, no matter where you go to order or buy a truck the price you get is the same. My truck stickered right at 36K and I got it for 29K. As hard as these truks are to keep on a lot, it would be hard to get a dealer to let you have one at this price. The other program is called the z plan and it is the same discount for retired members.

A and Z plan provide the same discount. It is supposed to be 4% below dealers invoice, which is 1% below dealers cost. Ford kicks back some money and gives the dealer credit for a sold car. The dealer only makes about $100 on the deal. Needless to say, some dealers are not real interested in selling some of the hot commodity vehicles to A & Z plan customers.
Fortunately, I was able to find a dealer that had no problem with ordering me a truck.

According to the district rep working out of our plant I was told that the dealer's kickback is seven percent of the MSRP on A/X/Z plan vehicles. That is a little more than $100 on a $38000 truck, more like $2660. Dealers in my area are more than happy to sell vehicles on A/X/Z plan. (I guess it doesn't hurt to have an assembly plant in your town )

A/Z plan is a great deal to those that it applies to (such as myself). It use to be 3.5% below invoice, but I think that's changed to 3%. The holdback is double, so the dealer gets either 7% or 6% in return for doing the deal (depending on if it's 3.5% or 3% below invoice).
Dealers love A/Z plan as it's a no haggle price and they get back twice as much than if they would have sold it to Joe Blow for invoice. It is not available to the general public as the A/Z plan eligible person must call into Ford with the info as to who is buying/leasing the vehicle and their relation to the eligible employee (son, daughter, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, etc). There are restrictions on how many an employee is eligible for (I think it's 4 vehicles of each model year) and how long it must be kept in the person's name before they can sell it without incurring a penalty (6 months). In return they get a PIN # to put on the deal so FoMoCo knows the deal was actually sold to an eligible person. It sounds a bit complex, but it's actually very easy.
Oh yeah, the dealer does not have to sell a vehicle at A/Z plan if they don't want to. If it's a hot commodity that is demanding a premium price (close to or even above retail) then they can refuse to sell at A/Z plan and hold out for more profit. Supply and Demand type stuff .

Correct. But the eligible family member must still contact the Ford 800 # to get that PIN for you. Plus, you still need to keep the vehicle for 6 months in your name or else you will incur a penalty from Ford.
It used to be that the employee or the retiree had to do the transaction and be on the registration for at least six months. Now, each family member who is going to buy a car gets their own pin.
I ran into a couple of dealers who refused to sell me a truck. One even yelled at me that he wasn't going to take food out of one of his salesman's kids mouth.
One interesting note, my father-in-law is on the Z-plan but when they got me a pin #, it was on the A-plan. Who knows, it could have been a Ford mistake.

I don't think keeping this truck for more than six months will be a problem.
