This may be a stupid question, but if I order a F250 4x4 Crew-Cab SWB 6.4L is there a real difference between the F350 with the same equipment, or is it just a GVRW number? I used to be under the impression that the 350 had better axels, stiffer springs, and maybe some other various differences, however I have heard that the only difference is GVRW.

For a coupla years around 2001 there was virtually no difference between the F-250 and the F-350 SRW, other than the standard tires and the size of the spacer block in the rear suspension of 4x4s. But the news got out, so Ford put back in some differences.
For the 2007 models (and probably 2008 models too), the big difference is rear spring rating and rear axle rating. Also standard 17" tires and wheels on the F-250 vs. 18" on the F-350 SRW, although 18" and 20" tires are wheels are options on the F-250.

smokey..... where did you get that infomation from? Are there any other differences that you know of? Are the rear axles totally different on the 250 vs. 350? Or is that rating taken from the load capacity of the tires?

Ford Truck Source Book. Every dealership has at least one copy, and big dealers have several copies.

Not that I know of.

Yes. They are the same basic design (Ford design with 10.5" ring gear) and they are both made in the same plant (Ford Axle Plant in Sterling, MI). But they have different specs. The actual axle shaft for the F-250 is 1.36" minor diameter spline and 1.50" major diameter spline and 35 splines. The shaft for the F-350 SRW is 1.50". 1.57" and 37 splines.

Yes, the Ford engineers must be in a conspiracy to use F-350 SRW axles under F-250s, because that somehow cheats the F-250 owners. The problem with that conspiracy theory is that any third grader can count the splines and tell you that they are different. I do not know about the spec, but I bought an '08 F350. It rides better than my '04 F250. My guess is the longer rear leaf springs.
[/ QUOTE ]
According to the 2004 Ford Truck Source Book and the preliminary version of the 2008 Ford Truck Source Book, the 2004 F-250 and the 2008 F-350 SRW have rear leaf springs of the same length = 58.1". The weight capacity of the rear spring pack changed, but not the overall length.
[ QUOTE ]
Smokey, I thought Ford's advertising was saying they lengthened the rear leafs on the 08's?
[/ QUOTE ]
May be, but the only specs I've seen says the main leaf is the same length as the previous model's. However, that "preliminary" version of the 2008 Truck Source Book has lots of errors, so maybe that's an error too?

I just went from a 2002 F250 XLT LB CC 2 Whl drive to a 2008 F350 XLT CC LB 4x4. I hooked up to my 5th Wheel this afternoon for a test drive. Even though I had just installed a new on-board compressor and AirLifts I left them at the Minimum inflated 5lb pressure on purpose. When I lowered the 5th Whl on the hitch it didn't hardly squat at all. With my F250 I usually ran 80-90 lbs in my air bags to get to level. I did pump the new ones up to 30 lbs for the test drive. When I got out on the level street I stopped and put a level to the trailer overhang and the bubble was perfect. No adjustment required. I have 8-9 inches of clearance between the bed rails and 5th Wheel. I might add, the tow command system is awesome. I never made any stops over 30 MPH but I could really tell a difference over the Prodigy on my 2002 and it was the best controller I ever had, bar none. I can not get over the smooth and quiet ride of this F350 4x4 compared to my previous F250. I believe we have a winner
For 2005 to 2007's srw trucks....Size of the standard wheels (17" vs 18"), rear axles have different diameter & splines, 350 comes standard with rear aux springs, 350 4wd has 4" axle blocks, 250 has 2" rear axle blocks, 350 has different rear shocks (longer) and different carrier bearing mount (lower). Spring rates dependent on options. That's about it.
