Page 24 of the 08 SD brochure claims that Ford offers factory-installed bedliners. Has anybody gotten this (cost, if so?), or do people normally opt for the after-market spray-in type?

No drop ins for me, Ford branded or otherwise...my '08 will be out for Line-X next week. Of course that assumes that she'll be in my driveway this week.

Since this is my first truck, what are the advantages of a Line-X bedline over a drop-in bedliner? What needs installed first -- the bedliner or 5th wheel hitch? Thanks for helping a newbie figure this stuff out!!!

In some places it is illegal to have the hitch mounted on top of the bed liner. You can cut the liner to fit around the hitch but it is a pain to do. Drop in liners eventually rub the paint off the box and then moisture that gets trapped between the liner and the box can cause rust. If you have the spray in liner done make sure you drill the holes for your hitch first and make them slightly oversize. The liner will then wrap the edge of the holes and protect them from rust. I have had both types of liners and much prefer the Line-X to the drop in.

I actually asked this same question of the group several months ago and got some real good advice. Look here and you can read my thread and the responses.
For the hitch, I've heard that you get it installed first so that the Line-X guys can remove it and coat the holes...but, I'm not getting one so one of you other guys out there chime in will ya'? Kev, how about you? Didn't you just get your fiver hitch in the other day?
Good luck,
John

I was following a truck down I-35 one day and saw the wind lift a drop-in bedliner out of the truck and put it in the median.

first, a correctly instaled drop in bedliner won't blow out because its anchored under the side rails.
second, the page mentioned in the brochure is the accessories page - you can order the bedliner from the catalog. They don't put them in at the factory

I have the "Ford" liner in mine, dealer installed, and it is also held in by the front cargo tie downs being bolted through it.
As far as the rust idea, yes it wears a few spots bare but they don't rust because it is always going to rub there and keep those spots shiny. I have other things on the truck trying to rust but not the bed.

I recommend you install the bedliner first, then the hitch.
Some drop-ins can fly out of the truck's bed. Durakon the worlds largest manufacturer of drop-ins and the source of many OEM liners has a recall on some of their liners for fear of them flying out of the beds.
My vote would be for a drop in liner. I just installed one a few min ago on my '08. I do not like the spray in ones, because of several reasons. They oxidize and grey out, losing their color. Second, they do not protect from dents, I stripe parking lots, and will put pails of paint in the truck, and I have never had a dent with a plastic liner, but a friend of mine has a bed with a spray in liner, that is beat to heck, its crazy. With drop in, if you damage it by say spilling something or whatever, you can just buy a new one, while its hard to do that with a spray in. And last, I have had my '97 for ten years with the same plastic liner, and it has not developed rust in the bed, it has scratched the paint a bit, but no rust. I just like the plastic ones, IMHO....
I have the Line-X spray in product installed ASAP after purchase of the truck, and also have it in the bed of my Mule. A lot of dealers will have it installed when the trucks arrive. This a great product; it protects the bed, is relatively non-skid, looks good, comes in any color to match truck or trim. If installing a GN (or other hitch) do it first, then head to Line-X. They will remove the ball, tie hooks, etc. and install the product, then reinstall everything. In effect, the liner becomes an integral part of your truck. It is more expensive than most drop in liners--especially if you opt for color option to match truck or trim--but I think it is worth the money. Do negotiate on price and shop from dealer to dealer.

If I was spending $50K for a truck I'd have a spray-in liner installed to color match the the truck, then throw a drop-in PENDA skid resistant liner in the bed, then maybe throw a bed mat on top of that.
I put a PENDA S/R liner in My '96 the day AFTER I picked the truck up....still no leaks, no rust, no scratches, hasn't blown out... and stuff still doesn't slide around. And some of the stuff I've hauled could be VERY hard on pickup beds, like loader buckets, 150# wheel weights, large steel sheets like 4 ft & 8 ft 1/4" thk steel plate, etc. Mine's an over-the bed rail liner because I didn't want scratches on the tops of My bed sides.

I agree!! My first '03 had a sprayed in liner from the previous owner, and I installed a penda plastic one when I got it. That is the best protection, but expensive too.

I opted for the two liner method on my '08 also. The spray in liner looks sharp and has a lot going for it including non-skidable, moisture resistance scratches etc, but is not dent resistant and can be torn. The drop in protects the bed from dents, the liner from tear's, and can be replaced. Since I carry forklift loaded equipment skids I opted for the liner also since I have yet to see a forklift operator who does not drag a load across the bed at some point which would tear up a spray liner.
