Help me distinquish sales fact from fiction

So time is running out for me to find a truck. I spent an hour haggling with the salesman last night working on a deal for a 450. At the end of the day he came back with a price that he said was below A pricing (not that I know what A pricing is). Sticker on the truck was $71k, his better than A price was $64,500. Does this sound about right to you guys?

For my application the 350 dually will be enough. Even though $7k below list is a pretty good price in my mind, it was still a little higher than I wanted to go. So I asked him to work on a deal for a 350. He came back telling me I'd only be looking to save about $700 between the 350 and 450. That just doesn't compute.

Could use your opinions on this one. Although the Ford is a very nice, feature rich truck, $65k may still be difficult to justify when a Dodge 3500 can be had for under $55k.

Re: Help me distinquish sales fact from fiction

the 450 is more truck than the 3500 dodge. if you only need 3500 you should consider a 350 ford, which will save you some money. if money is the biggest thing then get the dodge. it is not a bad truck and it is not junk. its not as nice, or as fast, but it is as strong puller if not stronger.

Re: Help me distinquish sales fact from fiction

I understand that the 450 is a beast and as such should be higher priced than the 350. Where I'm a little confused is the salesman's statement that there is less than $1k difference between the 350 and the 450.

If that is the case I cannot justify $10k more for a truck that is capable of the same work. Too bad. If the engine turns out Ford has a real winner of a truck there.

Re: Help me distinquish sales fact from fiction

I don't care what you add to an F450 from the factory, you can't get it up to 71K. Go to kbb.com and get the "invoice" price on the truck as equipped and offer then NO more than invoice +500. They get 3% back from Ford so they don't have to pay even invoice for the truck. I have a fairly loaded F450 CC 4wd that cost me less than 55K.

I suspect they hit you with "second sticker" or as they call it here, "adjusted market value" where they inflate the sticker by 2-10K.

Re: Help me distinquish sales fact from fiction

He's a bit "high" on the sticker, partly cause he's in it to make money and partly because of CDN $$ exchange rates.

Multiply your price of $71k by .87 and you'll see US$61,770 as the sales price...still a wee bit high eh?

....ooops, just checked today's rates....90.36....so multiply by.9036 or 64,155... = OUCH!

Re: Help me distinquish sales fact from fiction

Checked out kbb and there is no way to add options but invoice is $47k or $52k CDN. Far cry from the $64k we finally got down to.

Perhaps what I should do to run the VIN through carcost. This way I'll know exactly what they paid to have it placed on they're lot.

What's funny is I took the truck for a drive with the salesman. I asked him how well these trucks are moving. He tells me they've sold 2. 3/4 of the way through our negotiations the manager's now involved. He tells me that he sells the 450's 3-to-1 compared to the 350's. If I don't buy tonight it could be gone in the morning!

I'm so sick and tired of the entire process. A guy should be excited right?

Re: Help me distinquish sales fact from fiction

You don't have any other ford dealer in your area to use against him do you?

I guess that is one of the advantages of living just outside of Washington DC and having something like 10+ within 50 miles.

I learned to stay clear of Battlefield Ford. What a nightmare trying to buy a truck at a fair price from them.

That seems really high.... I bought a new '06 Dodge CTD 3500 SRW, Quad Cab, SLT longbed pretty well loaded for $36K USD out the door. The dually would have been about $900 more. Is there a way to buy in the States? $55K CDN is about $49K USD, right?

Re: Help me distinquish sales fact from fiction

I only wish there was a way to buy down there. No U.S. dealer will sell to a Canadian resident. If I buy used, the warranty will be no good in Canada. The only way for that to work is for U.S. residents to move to Canada.

$65k is far to much. I will be looking at Dodge.

Re: Help me distinquish sales fact from fiction

Who gave you that info that the warrenty was no good in Canada if you purchase the vehicle in the USA. I enquired last year and the dealers here said that the paperwork transfer was $100.00 and you are good to go.

Cory,

If you do buy the Dodge, remember to look for the '07 5.9's. There's still plenty of them out there. No sense in getting a 6.7 unless you like EGR's, particulate filters, etc...The only emission device that that 5.9 has is a cat (err....most people still have theirs), and the third injection event. There are a TON of aftermarket products for the 5.9 also.

The 6 speed tranny on the 6.7's are getting rave reviews though. I also think that the 6.7's come stock with an exhaust brake also (don't quote me on that). If you are inclined to buy the 6.7 keep in mind that this very engine has been around for a long time and is considered a darn fine industrial Cummins engine.

Crap, I'm starting to like the idea of the new fangled 6.7

Re: Help me distinquish sales fact from fiction

Where abouts in AB are you. I dealt with the dealer on 75th in Edmonton on our 02. I cant remember their name but they have a huge commercial dept. I refuse to pay anything else than $500 over invoice, non negotiable. If they will not show you the invoice when the truck comes in then go somewhere else. There are tons of dealers so you hold the power.
Go to the ford.ca websight and build yourself a 350 and 450 and come up with the MSRP. What the salesman is saying is partially true I found that there was only a couple of grand difference between similar 350 and 450, just alot of things come standard on the 450 so they start at higher cost. And yes it is possible to have a 70K MSRP on a 450, in Canada that is. However we just paid 44+tax for our 350. You just have to sit down and decide what you actually need in options and what is a nicety. I found the biggest problem we have had buying trucks is that they always try and upsell you to the fully loaded one sitting on the lot. Thats fine if you want all that stuff and use it to tow a big RV. However all that stuff is just useless expense if you use it as a dirty work truck.
To me rubber floor and vinyl seats are the only way for me. To each his own.

Rob

I paid $59,500 american dollars for an F450 king ranch with almost every feature except for a sunroof. I got the navigation system, the audiophile system, PTO takeoff, 2 alternators, 4x4, Driver memory, folding mirrors, tailgate step, etc....
