Navigation exchange.

Just wondering if I can add the Navigation radio unit to my truck after delivery?
I have the CD-6 Audiophile, so it shouldn't be a big deal if I'm correct..

Re: Navigation exchange.

I guess... There could be more to it then that, like the GPS antenna (I heard it is just under the dash, maybe even on the radio it self), if the dealer wont try to charge you big time for the unit, trading for the nav unit wont be easy I'm sure.

Maybe look into after market, I have heard you could be better of going with a after market unit. You already have great speakers so nothing to do there if you don't want to. AND so much more can be done with after market units, like, back up cameras, I have seen cameras even in the mirrors, so when you turn on your turn single the screen will switch to that side, 1,2,3, or more monitors to watch DVDs, and so on.

Re: Navigation exchange.

George a gps antenna should have a clear view of the sky. Where they put it I don't know. Inside looking up through the glass is o.k. but if penetrateing metal you'll lose signal. I belive they mount it on top of the dash.

I have an after market one..(Garmin) that sits on top of the dash. I like that because i don't have to look down at the radio area while reading the gps. My eyes are that much closer to staying on the road.

And you will look hard at these things..worse then cell phones sometimes.

Garmin does sell a Large screen one..were one would put it is a question..

Nice thing about these you can take them with you and use them in any car anywere..

Re: Navigation exchange.

I think I'm going with a Garmin Nuvi 680 for the reason you stated.. I can take it with me in any vehicle.
A lot cheaper too.....

The Ford unit is a nice, clean install, but after reading up on it, it has a lot of operation downfalls.
Thanks.

Re: Navigation exchange.

Captcaper... The Ford GPS antenna is not seen anywhere on the truck, the only satellite antenna that can be seen is the one for satellite radio and I do know that antenna is not connected to the nav unit what so ever.

Has to be one somewere..Maybe combined with Sat radio? I have an external one I got from Gilsson for 20 bucks and has a magnet..I put it out front as I have an overhang from Lance camper.. It'll work without the external but you will get confused on close up city street turns and miss them. With the 9ft. accuracy I get with the antenna I know exactly were I'm at and were to turn..

Re: Navigation exchange.

Right it is somewhere, like I said under the dash... No isn't hooked up to the sat radio, because I have seen nav without sat and there is no ant on the outside of the truck.

Steve is the dash plastic? If so that might make the difference.

There has to be a way they designed it to recieve signals being installed there.

I know the newer gps processors use weak signals, signals bounceing off of walls, etc but they aren't as accurate as if they still were in clear view of the sky..

Re: Navigation exchange.

That I would have to say I am not sure off (if it is medal under the plastic top), But lets say the dash is medal, all there has to be is a opening in that medal to get past it. GPS has no problem getting past plastic and glass.

I have ask this a few times at the dealers I have gone to after seeing no GPS on the roof (just for sat radio, again I have seen Nav installed with "no" sat radio, so no GPS on the roof), they all say it is under the dash. I would bet it is on top of the Nav radio itself, all one unit. I guess we just have to wait for someone to pull the Nav radio and look (dealer/tech or owner). To bad I don't have the truck, because I would have no problem pulling my Nav unit just to confirm this one way or the other.

Re: Navigation exchange.

Like stated above the GPS antenna is under the dash. Currently Sirius and XM both train their installers that the GPS signal antennas and the SAT radio antennas need to mounted as far away from each other as practical. I have my Pioneer Z2 GPS antenna mounted under the dash, the XM on the right top, and the Sirius on the top Left of the trucks roof right above the windshield . All three work perfect.

Re: Navigation exchange.

I just checked my rear view mirror. There are seven wires going down to the mirror with three of them entering the back of the mirror and four of them entering a box that is wrapped around the mirror post that sure looks like it could be an antenna.
