New guy ordering a F-450.

Hey guys,

I am thinking about ordering a new F-450 for towing a fifth wheel. I have a Dodge now but I am going to buy a new toy hauler that will get close to 18k lbs. The new truck will be a regular cab XLT because it looks like I cannot get a Lariat in the regular cab. It will have the 6 speed transmission and 4.88 rear axle.

Does anyone know of a dealer in the Houston area that will order one for a good price? I will also need some kind of aftermarket bed. Is there a dealer around here that I can get one from? I am not sure what I want yet for the bed, I would like to look at some.

How long is the wait for new trucks now?

Thanks

Re: New guy ordering a F-450.

You are pretty much out of luck for the '05 model year. The order bank for the '06 opens in a week and a half and there is already a backlog of F450 and F550 orders that might not get filled.
Also either for '06 or '07 you will be able to order an F450 pickup from the factory so you won't have to spend the $$ on an aftermarket bed. we have an '05 F450 Lariet 4x4 pickup that we built for sale and it is not cheap. You would probably be better off with the '06 anyway. Don;t know any dealers in Houston. Prestige Ford in Dallas is pretty good. Ask for the Commercial Dept wherever you go, you will get straight answers as they are the F450/550 specialists. Most regular salespersons don;t have a clue about them.

Yeah, hook up with Cochise at Randall Reed Ford in Humble. He is not your normal "car salesman". He will tell you the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. Then keep you informed as your truck is going through the assembly process.

[/ QUOTE ]

Cochise can order the bed as well as the truck - at the same time on the same order. It's called "ship through". Ford builds the truck, then ships it to the company that adds the bed or body. When the truck is finished, Ford picks it up and ships it to the dealer. So it doesn't cost you any extra for shipping through the bed company.

I am not sure what I want yet for the bed, I would like to look at some.

[/ QUOTE ]

Surf over to the "Towing and Hauling" forum. Look at one of the first threads in that forum about beds and tow bodies for F-450/F-550. There are a bunch of websites listed where you can order your bed or tow body. Limit your looking to the "ship through" companies, and then you can order the bed or tow body from Cochise (or any Ford dealer).

If you want an ordinary pickup bed, then Manning is probably your best choice. Their plant is located right outside the gates of the Ford SuperDuty assembly plant, so there's not much time wasted in shipping the new chassis to them. They don't mention the pickup bed on their website, but they mount lots of them for Ford customers.

But depending on your trailer, an F-450 pickup may have too high side rails to fit your trailer and 5er hitch. So probably a hauler bed would be better for you. Several of the ship-thru upfitters sell the hauler beds. Including Manning.

The cheapest route is to mount a plain ole flat bed (platform body). With a trap door over the axle where either the gooseneck ball or the 5er hitch is located. Add storage compartments under the bed on the sides if you need them. And have it made out of aluminum if you need to conserve weight of the truck.

[ QUOTE ]
How long is the wait for new trucks now?

[/ QUOTE ]

Normally, about 6 to 8 weeks for the truck plus another week or two for the bed or body. But right now is not "normal" because the 2005s are winding down and the production of 2006s will begin soon. If you order from a high-volume truck dealer such as Cochise, then your truck will be one of the first 2006s assembled. But the 6-to-8 weeks wait doesn't begin until the assembly line cranks up.

If you'd settle for a 2005, Cochise might be able to find you one already in stock. Probably can't find exactly what you want - especially an XLT regular cab - but perhaps an XL with lots of XLT options such as air and cruise and cloth seats.

But I'd suck it up, order exactly what you want in a 2006, and wait for it to get here - probably in late June. Ask Cochise for a better estimate of delivery date.

Re: New guy ordering a F-450.

I went back and checked that list in the Towing and Hauling forum.

One of those ship-thru upfitters is right there in Houston

http://www.generalbody.com/flatbeds/flatbeds.html

They are a dealer for both Knapheid and Supreme, plus they do custom bodies. I'm sure you could find something you like there. Maybe decide on something General offers or will custom-make for you, then have Cochise order the new truck for ship-thru General.

If I were doing it, I'd probably want a Knapheid Westerner Storage body with the 5er hitch built in - under a trap door over the axle. If Knapheid doesn't offer it as an option, then I'm sure General could fix you up with a "custom" option to add the 5er hitch to the Westerner Storage body. http://www.knapheide.com/products/we...ge/default.asp

But when dealing with flatbeds, or the Westerner Storage body, double-check with the body company to be sure they can mount the 5er hitch at least 2" in front of the axle (preferably 4") and still have clearance at the back corners of the bed or bumper for turning a 5er a full 90º jacknife. If you go with an 8' bed, then no problem. But the more common 9' bed on a 60" cab-to-axle chassis cab might be a problem, so double-check.

Also with a flat bed, you can order the "dual fuel" option from Ford that will give you an extra 19-gallon fuel tank. However, you need to choose your bed/body first, because most of them do not allow the side tank. A plain flatbed without a storage box on the driver's side should work with most flat beds, but if the storage box is there - as it is on the Westerner Storage - then they may not be able to easily get the fuel filler neck for the side tank to where you can pour fuel in it.

That's why you need to decide on the bed first. Maybe talk to Cochise first, but just in case he doesn't have all the answers, you could spend some talking to the General folks. Maybe they can fit almost any body to a dual-fuel F-450, but I suspect it would be an expensive option on something like a hauler body.

Note that General does not stock Knapheid beds less than way-too-long for your needs. But if Cochise orders it from them as a Knapheid ship-thru upfitter, then General should be able to get the body from Knapheid before the new truck shows up from Kentucky.

BTW, General is a Ford truck "pool account". So they might have a 2005 in stock that would fit your needs. If they do, Cochise can get it from them for delivery to you. That way you don't have to negotiate with the salesmen at General.

In case it not clear to you yet, Cochise has sold hundreds of new Fords to members of TheDieselStop over the past several years. I watch him like a hawk, and I've yet to read of one complaint from his customers. (If you don't count a couple of customers that were waiting for their new truck to be delivered when Cochise made a "career move" to take over the fleet department at the Humble store. Those guys had to have their new trucks delivered to them by someone else at the old store, so they missed out on the world-famous "Cochise Delivery of a New Truck" experience.) Re: New guy ordering a F-450.

Thanks guys,

I will be getting in contact with Cochise this week and maybe visit with him next Saturday. I can wait for a 2006 truck to get what I want.

Here is a tow body from the list that my wife and I like : http://www.utilitybodywerks.com/ Is anyone here familiar with them?

Don

Yep. Notice their website says "We are a young company with very experienced people." That's because the current owners bought out an old company and kept the old employees. The previous company was named Elkhart something-or-other, and they made a similar tow body back then. Maybe the same one.

I saw one of the Elkhart tow bodies at a truckstop around the Kerrville area a few years ago. It was so attractive I just had to stop and see who made it. Then when I went looking for the company that made it, they had disappeared. Later David Sink told us he had a new Bodywerks tow body on his F-550, and sure enough, that was it. Click here to see David's truck.

You won't be disappointed with that tow body. You'll be proud of it. But it's not cheap!
