First, tradition around here demands that a first post get a big welcome, so WELCOME!!! This site, which is member-supported, has some of the best collective wisdom on diesels on the 'Net. You get it all here, and no one is shy with opinions on stuff, so believe me when I say that you will spend a lot of time here, enjoying talking and learning about your impending rig.
Second, any number of spots on the Internet exist to do what you want to do. For a review of your ride, check out www.edmunds.com and for invoice pricing, I like www.kbb.com
Welcome to the neighborhood! It is also a site tradition that the new guy buys the doughnuts. I like sour cream fried cakes, if you are making a run!
Off the main page of this site is an FAQ on '99-up superduty trucks. One of the areas within the FAQ is about obtaining prices, and another is about getting a good price when you order. Click on this to get to that FAQ quickly: http://www.ford-diesel.com/faq/1999f...OrderHowTo.htm
In addition to the price sources included in the FAQ, I recently found a good one - click here: www.carprice.com - spelled almost identical to another one that has gone downhill fast in the last few months.

Welcome Henry! Hope you enjoy this site as much as I have.
Here is the strategy that worked for me:
I stared by reseaching the configuration and pricing I wanted on carpoint.msn.com, www.kbb.com and www.edmunds.com. I then filled out the Costco online form. After about three days I got email from a local dealership (Bill Pierre Ford in Seattle) wanting details on my exact configuration. I supplied these details and got back a quote for $500 over(which was the price I wanted to pay), and an explanation that the exact truck I wanted could not be found and would have to be ordered.
Since Bill Pierre Ford is not known as a heavy volume truck outlet, and from my reading of this site, I knew that I wanted to place my order through a dealer that does a lot of SuperDuty business, as they are likely to have decent allocations.
So, I took the Bill Pierre email, and forwarded it to two other dealers that I thought likely to move a lot of trucks: Sound Ford in Renton and Bickford in Snohomish.
I got a reply from Sound Ford (Don Wellner, dtwellner@hotmail.com, Internet/Fleet Sales), who said he would meet my $500 over price.
Went in the next day (December 8, 1999) and ordered my truck. Got a DORA faxed to me on December 10th. Truck was serialized and scheduled that same day. Built January 24, 2000 and arrived at the dealership on February 9, 2000. Eight weeks from order to arrival, not bad!
Good luck, and no matter who you use, check their allocation. Sound Ford and Don Wellner did OK by me. Renton is a little bit of a trip for you, but could be worth it to get your truck faster.
Well, since everybody is plugging websites, I like carpoint.msn.com since you actually can configure and get the total price calculated for you. It also watches out for options conflicts/dependencies (You order the rear slider, it says you have to get the privacy glass).

Another way isto have a dealer as honest as mine who will show you the invoice price for the basic truck and all options. Then he adds $200.00 and that's it. No further hassling required. Of all the other ways, as a customer, having an honest dealer who cares about customers is the greatest.

hello,
Great response from everyone and i thank you for all the info.
i went back into the faq(how to order) and went to one of the web sites listed where the guy has 7 chapters of info to go through on how to buy a truck... wow this really opened my eyes. kind of like doing your own online stock picking/trading instead of having a broker do it for you...
i went with stoneage.com and a dealer in
seattle so we will be talking back and forth on price and options...
Stonage.com has a good site. I sat and watched as my dealer put the numbers in "the" computer and then printed me a copy... $500 over.

I have a dealer friend in Sandy Oregon that
is going to sell a SD PSD for a few hundred over dealer invoice. You can make your own deal with him if you like.. His name is Eric Schwarze and he is at Suburban Ford. Here is a toll free number to call, 1.888.891.9110. They have a good selection of PSD's in stock as this seems to be the truck of choice around the Portland/Metro area. Tell him that Tony from Gresham sent you! You can also contact him at suburban_ford@aol.com. I haven't tested this address myself, so if it does not work, let me know.
Don't be suprised if the numbers you get from kbb.com or others don't match either invoice or MSRP. And I think I'm getting the straight scoop because I keep getting same invoice/MSRP numbers from different dealers.
Also depends on market in your area, I would think. If they're the only one in town, they don't tend to come down because the next guy through the door will cough up the extra dollars. Especially in these parts--trucks sell themselves.

HighPlainsDrifter, I found that the invoice prices and MSRP from the dealer did match the invoice/MSRP from kbb.com (I compared the base price plus options). What kbb and the others typically don't show is the fuel charge and the infamous FDAF (Ford Dealer Advertising Fee). Since FDAF is (from what I understand) based on vehicle and region, it would make it harder for sites like kbb to get an accurate price.
Also any dealer add-on prices aren't reflected. (Oh, and tax, license and registration.
Go to www.carprice.com that is where I went and it was great. Also, why a short bed? With a long bed you get a 38gal. tank instead of a 29gal. tank.
Hope that helps,
Mike

Henryss...I think everyone has given you good advice you can use. A couple of things I would add...you did not really state your purpose for buying a PSD and I don't think you indicated what cab (regular, super, crew) you were getting. I would look at the F350. I think it is only a few hundred more and you get the extra payload capacity. I found the ride to be the same as the 250 in the crewcab configuration. Also, ordering the truck is simple. The waiting process can get to you. Find out as much as you can about the dealer you plan to buy from and his allocation in the truck you plan to buy. I have heard of people waiting for 5 to 6 months to get a truck because the dealer they are buying from simply had no allocations left in the configuration ordered.
I did not buy my truck thru Costco. I simply went online...priced the truck...checked out several Houston dealers...got a contact name from someone I knew...called the sales guy and told him what I wanted to order and asked him how much over invoice I would have to pay. He gave me a price, I was happy, he worked up the order and faxed me a copy of it, I checked it out, called him back and said order it, he did, and he faxed me a copy of the DORA on the truck. I still had never seen the guy. The first time I saw the guy I was buying the truck from is the day I went in to pickup the truck. We took the truck for a spin and then we signed the papers on the tailgate of the truck. Other than writing him a check for $36k+ it was about as painless as it could be.
And by the way...welcome to the forum. Hope you have a good experience ordering and getting your truck.
