How is it handled when I go to the dealer?

First of all, don't talk to anyone until you are looking at the fleet manager. Then ask him point blank, "Will you sell me a new (describe pickup, for example

F-250 Diesel CrewCab longbed 4x4 on the X plan?" If he says yes, then your negotiation is done - at least as far as the cash buying price of the new pickup is concerned.
So next step is to check his inventory to find the truck you want to buy. If he has it in stock, then the fleet manager must show you the dealer's invoice for any truck in stock that you want to buy under the X Plan. That invoice includes the dealer's invoice price for all the options and total vehicle price, and it also includes the total X-Plan price (not including TT&L or factory rebates).
The dealer cannot add any dealer packs, such as documentation fees or dealer prep fees. And you will get all the factory incentives such as rebates that are available on the date of delivery.
But if you have a trade-in or lease return, you still have to negotiate the amount of the trade in. You're usually - but not always - better off if you pedal your old iron yourself. Understand the sales tax penalty in most states if you sell it yourself.
And you have to pay all the TT&L, which can be several thousand dollars in some places with high state and local taxes to pay for the welfare state.
If the dealer doesn't have your truck in stock, you can order it under the X-Plan. The factory incentives might change before you take delivery, but that's a gamble you are stuck with.
Most dealers won't sell you a new truck under X Plan if they have to trade for the vehicle with another dealer. They just can't make any money that way, so they usually won't do it.
What I would do if you don't want to wait for an ordered truck to arrive (or if you want a 2006 model with high factory incentives) is do a dealer inventory search until you find your truck, then go to that dealer to buy it.
Click here, then put in the zip code of any dealer you want to check inventory. And note that you can also see the X-Plan price of each truck in stock.
(You'll be told about that website when you receive your X-Plan PIN, but you might want to begin using it ahead of time.)
