XL Crew Cab Safety Headrests for Rear Seat

Perhaps this post will get moved but I would think Bobby or someone may be able to answer..

Questions:
1) Why is it legal for Ford to sell a 2005 Crew Cab XL without headrests in the rear seat? I am referring to the head support you get to prevent backlash. If I had paid attention when I bought the vehicle I would not have bought it.

2) My local Ford dealer is saying it would cost about $2,500 to buy a replacement back seat with headrests (parts and labor). Other than buying something out of a wrecked vehicle, does any one have a better suggestion how to get proper headrests?

To the best of my knowledge, there's not a law that requires any manufacture to have head rests on the rear seats. From 1999-2004 the SD's never had the head rests. I will say that on the 2005+ trucks (XLT/Lariat)it's a seling point

Your dealer is being upfront with you. Ford does NOT sale a completed seat assembly, but instead requires the dealer/customer to purchase all the items individualy. I think this is due to Ford not wanting the liability of someone changing out the seats.

Your best bet would be to check eBay for new take out seats, in which I have done in the past. Another option would be to contact aftermarket companies in your area that do seat conversions, such as those companies that do rear sofa bed conversions, i.e. Classy Chassis, Fontaine, Roll-A-Long, Utility Bodywerks.

Re: XL Crew Cab Safety Headrests for Rear Seat

There are also aftermarket companies that make a head rest that mounts to a "rail" that is bolted above and below the rear window.
