XL value at trade-in time

Just curious. We are looking for a 2002 250 or 350 PSD Crew Cab 4x4. The XL would suit us better probably, not having to worry about it getting a little dirt on it. I don't really want to have to be overly cautious about everything I do in it.

My question is this. How bad is the trade in on an XL vs. and XLT or Lariat, figuring condition being the same? Do XL's get beat up on resale? Say the XL truck costs $35k and an XLT costs $40k, will there be a lot more than $5k difference when it's time to sell or trade?

Re: XL value at trade-in time

It's easy to check, but I'll let you do the legwork.

Surf to one of the many websites that have used-car prices. Determine about how old your turck will be when you will probably trade it in. Then check the difference in trade-in value between the two comparable trucks with the same mileage but with different options equivalent to the difference in options on XL and XLT.

Example is 1997 F-350 SRW CrewCab 4x2 with PSD and automagic tranny with 80,000 miles. The XL would have whatever options you added to it - AC perhaps. The XLT would have power everything, AC, and other items std in the XLT pkg. That will show the difference in trade-in 5 years from now. Then compare the invoice cost of the new 2003 trucks. Then come back here and tell us what you found.

Here are some websites to use for your research:

www.nadaguides.com

www.edmunds.com

www.kbb.com

www.carprices.com

www.carprice.com

And there are several others, including the big MSN carpoint site, and a Motor Trend magazine site.

Re: XL value at trade-in time

I had used a couple of those sites to get an idea before. Thanks for the additional links. From everything I see an XL (basic) vs. an XLT with options will not have a huge price spread in similar shape at 5 years old and in the same condition. Looks to be $1500-2000 at the most. I guess I was just questioning the accuracy. I found it somewhat shocking they were that close

Thanks
