When I got the McGard was disappointed in seeing the use of plastic - very easily defeatable as stated

Purchased a Jimmi-Jammers and it is much more robust - quick install too

Gate Keeper Not Effective

I live in the north Texas area and my tailgate has been stolen twice. Once back in March of this year and the second one just this morning.

The second incident I had the Jimmie Jammer company "Gate Keeper" bracket on the hinge plate. I can post a photo later of this thick stainless steel piece bent to hell and did not stop the thief one bit. Don't waste your money. I think the big heavy hose clamp may be more effective as it would be tough to get a pry bar or large screwdriver under the hose clamp.

I am sure my insurance will drop me like a bad habit after two in one year.

Did you approach Jimmie Jammer in any way regarding the theft even with the use of their product?

I attempted to send them an email with the photo using their email address but got a return indicating the owners mailbox was full and it could not be received. Will try calling them but I am sure the story will be it is a theft deterrent with no guarantee of stopping anything.

Got my lock in today. Pretty pleased with it. All metal and seems well built. Time will tell.

Update on Gate Keeper Bracket

Well I found a email address specifically for Jimmie Jammer and managed to discuss the failure with the right person and they refunded my $24.95.

While I am glad they stepped up and took care of that and I appreciate that the product still only provides minimal protection as it has enough clearance under it to stick a tool under it to bend it.

I may give the SS hose clamp with the Masterlock or Bully lock combined if I don't come up with something of my own.

tailgate alarm

I tried the masterlock tailgate lock but it was too loose and would slide to the right to almost come off the tailgate part of the hinge so I returned it to the store. I just used a gear clamp to slow down the thieves and installed a magnetic switch on the tailgate and wired it into my factory hood contact for the built in alarm. When I lock the truck with the remote the truck arms itself in about 20 seconds and the tailgate then is armed with instant alarm. In this mode if the tailgate is opened the horn blows instantly and hopefully scares the thieves away. I plan on installing a louder horn near the back of the truck after the snow clears and the weather warms up.

Do you have a write up on how to hook it up to the alarm. I have no clue how to wire it to the alarm.

Factory Tailgate Lock = Worthless

I've had the mcgard on all of mine, this time around I opted for the master lock. It is loose around the sleeve, but it's all stainless and it won't come open without some serious work. I do like the idea of tapping into the hood switch, I'm assuming u find where it runs down the hood and tie into it with the new switch?

Great idea! I've always locked my tailgate, but I don't count on it slowing anyone down. If your not sure why tailgates are getting stolen, cause it can be removed within a few seconds ( literally) and you can get $300-800 for em on Craigslist. It's a crime of opportunity really. Kinda like if your wheels and tires could be stolen if they were stacked up on the tailgate.

adding tailgate alarm

My truck is a 2013 with the security group option. The hood contact is a plunger type switch located in front of the drivers side battery. I tied the magnetic contact in series with one side of the circuit going to this switch. I ran a 1/2" plastic water pipe down between the fuse box and firewall on the drivers side down to the frame and tie wrapped it along the frame to the right back corner of my box. I fished an 18-2 cable (any small gauge wire can be used since it is protected from the elements with the water pipe) to the back and up the back post of the box. The magnetic switch I used is used in home alarm systems and is a 3/8" magnetic door contact. I mounted a rare earth magnetic on my tailgate on a bracket I cobbled up from an old security camera mount. If you have any questions you can send me your phone number and I can talk you through it or I can take some pictures and email them to you.

tailgate alarm

My last post should say " left back corner" not right back corner of the box.
I proof read it twice before I sent and I still didn't see the error. Old age!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
