Power folding mirror question

I would love to set them up to close with key off and to open when the key is turned on... This can't be to hard to do... I will be digging into the door soon... this sure would help with tight parking to just be auto..

I will be watching this post for an answer also! I would love the power mirrors in/out with the ignition. IMHO this is the way Ford should have done it from the factory.

How are you all going to park your truck with the ignition off? I don't follow what you are trying to accomplish here? Just asking as I am curious.

Until you open the door there is still power for the radio and windows, should be easy enough to figure out how to tap that source to fold in the mirrors, I would think. Make it part of the easy in/out feature somehow.

mudrat,
We want the mirrors to fold in when the ignition turns off and reopen when the ignition is turned on. The power is still on when truck is shut off so as someone has already posted.....there just might be away.
For my part, our city is made for sub-compacts so any space I can save is helpful.

Some of the upper level F150s have this feature. I thought it was gimmick, now I understand why and wish I had it.

I love that mirrors fold but personally like that don't do it automatically. Yes I use it daily but only once out of the ten times a day I start my truck. Would be nice if it could be part of the my key so it could be either way based on preference.

Depending on how they wired and trigger to go in out (constant power vs pulse etc) it might require some relays to make it all work like you want.

I'd much rather have the ability to just fold in one mirror like the passenger side in those tight spots where you still want to see behind you.

Something to keep in mind:
I'm confident that the motors that fold the mirrors in and out have a calculated number of "cycles" that they have been designed for. By making them automatic with Key on / Key off, thus dramatically increasing the number of cycles, you're just asking for premature failures.

I'm not sure if the motors are serviceable independent of the mirrors, or maybe it's not a concern.

just my 2 cents

I don't understand the big deal, when I open my door, I hit the switch. Mirrors are out before I can even get the truck started.
When I shut the truck down, I hit the switch again, mirrors are in before I get my crap out of the truck and shut the door. No big deal.

True, but why not 'wish' for something extra....
By the time the turbo is cooled, the batteries recharged, the flaps & slats reconfigured, all radioes reset, weapons systems resupplied and flight plans filed, this would just be one less thing to worry about.

Sounds like a lot of unnecessary wear and tear on the mirror motors if you ask me. There are days when I start my truck many times. When I do want the mirrors in, I just tap the knob back. I don't get why it should be automatic.
