It's not that it "should" be, but that it "could" be, if the driver/owner wanted it. Just another option for the truck (select, or deselect). It's not a bid deal to me, but it's a cool idea!
Spoke with a ford tech on Friday and he stated the mirrors are are tested for a 100% duty cycle.... As if the driver was to do this everytime he/she shut the truck off. I got a copy of the ford 2012 wiring diagrams and connector pin out manual. And after looking at this we believe that we can do what we wish with this project. Like only fold one mirror, fold them when you turn key off. And we DPDT switches... Still looking in to this. One side note is that there is a wiring diagram for auto up windows. There is a pin out and a switch pn#. I will see if that number is valid one Monday. This could be an easy mod as well.
Personally I wouldn't wire it up for folding every time I touch the ignition mainly because I've read too many times guys having problems with the mirror mechanisms as it is. It would be different if you could just open one up and order a new motor or gear set and put it back together but you have to buy the whole dang mirror if the something simple craps out. Too pricey for me. I'll take the two seconds to fold the mirrors in myself when I think they need it not the ten times a day that I'm in and out of my truck.
I like this idea to me the chance of having to replace a mirror cause a motor died is less likely then having to replace a mirror that someone broke in the parking lot after getting mad that they walked into it. People don't really pay attention when they are walking. I usually fold mine in when I park in parking lots because of this I've actually seen people start to push the mirror until they see me still sitting in there still with the kids while my wife shops. I already fold mine in every time I park in the garage to clear the garage door.
Wow, Never considered this much of big deal. Probably only retracted mine 10-12 times in 75,000 miles. Usually when I have to go thru a drive through teller at the bank. And I'm trying not to hit stuff in that narrow lane.

That goes back to my original post...In our town, Honda Civics and the likes, are what our parking lots are designed for. As such, its is not like the ranch, we have to conserve space just to fit, and you know "management" likes to shop!
So this mod may not be for everyone, but others would love to see it. You could compare this thread to the ones about extra fuel tanks...Some think they are just what the doctor ordered but others wonder why you would haul an extra 700 pounds around??
Different strokes for diffrent folks.

There used to be a website where you could buy the aftermarket power folding/extending/turn signals mirrors OEM. Think it was one of the Site sponsors. Anybody remember which one it was?

There is a company that takes them off for fleet conversions and sells them for $450 a pair. The sets my friends and I received were like new but I know of one guy that received a set that had a few minor scratches on them and were a bit dirty.
