Yeah, on that big a truck a 16.5 seems like the right match. A W8000 would be way too small (always needs a doubled line and snatch block), a 10K would be marginal.

What kind of bumper are you going to put on?

My thoughts would be to get the highest-rated front springs possible or consider a F-350 to handle the extra weight of the winch and bumper

If you're really going to depend on it for pulling...especially pulling your truck when stuck...it needs to have a pulling capacity of 1 1/2 to 2 times the weight of your truck. A 8000 pound truck needs a min. 12K. This is a case where bigger is better!

Great information, all - thanks. The winch would be for use, not looks. I've got hilly acreage in the Smokies and getting stuck is always a real possibility. I just wanna get unstuck!

I agree 2x the vehicle weight plus some chump. No sense messing with anything less. Now then .. have you considered the strength of your other recovery gear? Like pulleys ( at least 2 snatch blocks), clevis pins, maybe an anchor strap and then either graded chain or another rated tow strap? just considerations for a recovery kit. Most important, get a wire rope guard in case that thing breaks.. you don't need that thing coming back at ya with enough force to cut you in half.

I do all this with my Jeep. I am part of a recovery team.. actually go out and have fun but also carry the gear to recover the team.

Have you guys considered or have used synthetic winch line and is it made for 15-16k winches? Reason I ask is I have a Ramsey 15k with steel line on it and was gonna put on a custom receiver plate for front and rear usage....not on sig truck now as I don't need it for DD. Thinking synthetic would reduce weight significantly and would not need 3 men and a boy to hook up...any thoughts or links for synthetic would be cool.

thanks,

jrc

Synthetics like blue steel are great for these winches. Using a rated synthetic rope has the advantage of being lighter, actually stronger than its steel counterpart designed for a certain size winch and they also add an element of safety as when this rope gives it falls away as opposed to wire memory and the machete sling. Under those circumstances the wire rope is quite dangerous.

I am considering the synthetic rope with the hawsey aluminum fairlead myself. First its the front JKS ACOS for ther Jeep.

Many people in my 4WD club use it. Like NEVERSWEAT7 said it's lighter and will drop to the ground if it breaks. Just have to watch out when you winch that it doesn't run across rocks or sharp edges. Cost a little more, last time I was checking into it, a few years ago, it was around $1.75 per foot

Winch and front bumper for 2011 Super Duty

There was a very tricked out 2011 F250 done in Dewalt colors at the SEMA show in Las Vegas. The winch set up on that truck was a Warn and it had a custom front bumper that accommodates the winch, a compressor on top of the winch and two quick connects for the transmission PTO offerred as an option on the 2011 Super Duty diesels. I looked at the Warn website for the bumper but nothing for 2011 models was available. When I get my 2011 Super Duty in a couple of months, I'd:ford like to get the bumper, winch and PTO set up I saw on the Dewalt truck at the SEMA show. Does anyone known if Warn, or others, are working on front bumpers for the 2011 Super Duty? Warn are you out there and listening? BTW, good pictures of the Dewalt truck and front winch set up are available on line. Go to the SEMA show and you'll find them.
