Wind howl in cross wind only

Good evening fellow ford owners. I have been an owner of a 2011 SD Lariet
since May of 2011 and I do love my truck. My first SD was an 02 7.3 and while it was a great truck this one blows it away in comfort and style. Also thank you to all the other members for the informative postings and videos. They have made my few minor mods a breeze( Titan Tank 50gal, Mbrp tips, door seal mod, Bilstein 5100s and a couple others) > so with that being said, has anyone had an issue with a wind howling noise only in a strong crosswind and only when wind blows from passenger side? The sound resembles a cheap New Years Eve paper horn and seems to be coming from the drivers side windshield area. Thankfully its only intermittent or I would go crazy but there is probably no way a dealer could diagnose this problem.
I have tried folding the mirrors in and turning on wipers but that has no effect.
Has anyone else experienced this or have any ideas as how I can solve it?

Thanks
Brian

Brian, mine does the exact same thing every once in a while. Good description on the sound, by the way. In my case its very infrequent and I haven't yet been able to nail it down. It did it more when brand new (last July) and hasn't done it for so long that I actually forgot about it until reading your post. I'm going to look at it again and see if I can figure this out. I'll get back to you if I find a likely suspect.

OK Brian, I've got my suspects. There is a rubber trim strip (for lack of a better description) that runs up the sides of the windshield and across the top. Theres also a soft rubber flap that comes up from under the cowl piece and runs across the bottom edge of the windshield. Its got to be one of these two pieces making the noise. My first suspicion is the lower piece because its so soft and flexible. I'm not sure how you'd fix it short of glueing it to the glass.

I had that, actually thought the dealer would not be able to duplicate it.

Had them check it when they flashed the transmission.

They actually fixed it the very first time!!!

Said that they resealed the windshield.

How they did that I have no clue.

When you get the howl, touch your grab handle and see if you can feel the vibration.

Since the fix I have only very slightly heard it one time.

There is a little different whistle that may be coming from the widow moldings.

About 90% of the SD's I have seen have mis fitting moldings in the upper rear corner of the glass. That makes a whistle under the right conditions.

They replaced my mouldings... but they have deformed again.

It probably has to do with the weather.

But I notice that the Dodges on the lot I park on don't have that issue.

Back to the top. Does anybody have a whistle from the front end? I seem to be getting air between the grill and the hood seal. I can see the grill raising up in strong wind. (85 mph+) Leaves a small 1/2 " gap where I think air is getting through.

I dont think it is the windsheild. Seems to be coming fom the front end.

there are four bolts holding the grill down when you pop the hood. they are a 10mm. you can loosen those bolts and move the grill back a bit and get it to ride closer to the hood. it will close up the gap

as for the wind noise i have the same problems from time to time. i could hear wind right beside of my head while driving. had water doctor look at it and the molding around where the window rolls up had a major gap.. took it to the dealer the next time he was there and fixed it in 30 mins at no charge(warranty). now i just have some noise on the windshield. i think its coming from the top center

Lucent & spedkid94,

I still have your truck’s details, so drop a line via PM and I’ll be happy to arrange a call from the Customer Service Manager in your area.

I had thisonmy truck as well.
For me when I shut my truck door there was a small gap in the rubber trim piece and the door right where the a-pillar came down right behind the F350 emblem. I placed some black tape over it and went for a drive and ... No whistling.
I got back home and just "worked" the seal and it spread out enough to close the gap.

Anybody find a solution to this noise? Mine seems to only do it in a higher than normal wind condition and following behind a semi. I have a appointment at my dealer (5star) to see if they can find the problem. I take alot of trips and this can get annoying.

Dealer was not able to duplicate the noise and said they have not had anyone come in with this noise. Mine has been so infrequent it hasnt been much of a problem. We had high winds last week and I heard it two times and it was only for a couple of seconds at a time. This was the first time in a couple of months it has done it. Plan on taking a trip in a few weeks and I will see what it does.
