Post Going to order a gasser

I am going to trade my '06 6.0 next week on a '11 Dually Lariot. I no longer drive the truck on a daily basis as I purchased a grocery grabber to put around town. I haul a large camper and pull a boat. To me(I hope I am right), the extra cost and maintenance of a diesel just doesn't compute. I hope this new engine will get the job done. I have driven several and things seeem to be tied together well.

I did the same thing, ordered in jan. took del. in april.I had a 06 350 4x4 6.0 supper cab long box ,and a 97 7.3 dually beore that.So far the 6.2 250 4x4 s.c. long box has done quite well. Since I dont tow often I couldn't justify or afford the extra cost of the 6.7. After 2 1100 mi.round trips to my property with about 2000# of tools and equipment in the truck and moving my tracktor loader 35mi. with a tri axel goose neck trailer (about 14000#) with out any problem, I'm impressed with the truck.

As the EPA continues to tighten the screws on diesels it's just not worth it anymore. Manufacturers who have gone to direct injection gas engine technology are making big horsepower and torque gains.
There was an Excel spreadsheet that I had once that would show the cross-over point for the added expense of a diesel engine. As we all know the spread on fuel prices was the wrong way for a long time and who is to say it won't go there again? Even when diesel prices were "favorable" my recollection was that it took several hundred thousand miles to make the diesel "pay for itself". Maintenance issues and general problems with the 6.0 and 6.4 made me look the other way and buy a gas truck this time.
Until some manufacturer figures it out I'm not looking back unless it's a nice low mile 7.3 or 5.9 pre-regen/urea engine.

The new 6.2 engine with the 6 speed tranny is a really nice set up. I love mine, and look forward to many good years and miles with it.

Noble1, You will not be disappointed with the 6.2!

I have 2,600 miles on my 6.2 gasser so far and I luv it! It tows my boat like it's not even there. I did consider the diesel when I was ordering, but the $7,800.00 on the sticker, + more $$$ for fuel, more $$$ to maintain, it would never pay me back with the "better" fuel milage.

The 6.2 runs so sweet and smooth, has plenty of power for my needs. (I did order it with the 4.30 final drive) Lowest milage per tank so far: 12.3 mpg's. Best milage on a tank full: 14.1 mpg's

This truck rocks!!!

Good choice, I admit I am bias against diesel cause its too hard to get, places that sell diesel are too few and too far between, the price of diesel jumps up and down in price, it gells up in the winter, hard starts when cold, the noise, the smoke, the increased maintenance, more expensive to repair, unskilled mechanics that can't troubleshoot a diesel, I would go with a CNG fueled engine before I went with a diesel.
The 6.2 is a powerful engine, what surprized me the 6.2 doesn't sound anything like the 5.4 engine, it sounds strong like a race car engine, for you guys that want to chop off that perfectly good muffler and install a louder exhaust for that race car sound, you won't need to do that cause it already has that strong race car sound.
Your Dodge Hemi friends will be impressed with your new Super Duty with the 6.2 gas

I did take delivery of the truck about a week and half ago....got my first 500 break in miles on it and then put on the truck camper(heavy unit). Went to Michigan...got about 9 mph. Heavy head winds on the way...handled the load well. Getting about 13- 14 without load. My 6.0 averaged 11 mph loaded and around 14-15 around town. I like the unit so far. Unfortunately truck is back at dealer having the roof repainted...about a 3 millimeter wide and 1 mm deep paint flaw. Very noticable.

We have a Lance camper 1121 with a slide out....HEAVY dude. Don't know exact weight. Requires a dually and beefed up suspension. Truck handled it fine. Going to IU F/Ball game this weekend.

Question

Noble1,

What differential gears do you have? Also, how big is your boat? I have been pondering the same thing. I currently have a very heavy Articfox camper(about 4K) and tow 5-7K behind that. So my gross is about 19K or so when all added up. Do you know what your gross weight is? Also, any updates on how it is pulling up hills and what not?

Thanks a lot for the info!

I don't think you can ever "justify" the diesel expense over gas if you drive the vehicle just to tow recreationally, or use the vehicle to commute. The delta between purchase cost of a gasoline unit versus diesel is so high that the vehicle rots out before payback is realized.

My 6.0 is my first diesel, but in my case, $12K for an '04 is close enough to a gasoline unit in price, so this diesel/gasoline purchase delta is a moot point. I do need to figure an additional $1k in upgrades to make my 6.0 reliable. My son is intrigued with my diesel, but I tell him he is better off with his V-10 F-250 in the long run. If you don't wrench on the 6.0 yourself, the repair expenses can drown you! Good luck with the 6.2, I hear it's a great engine.

Deltajohn,

I agree completely. Justifying the cost of a diesel is pretty tough to do for recreational towing/hauling, but some folks just want to have a diesel so they're willing to pay the premium price for it.

ghmanpsd:

I have a 3.75 in the rear end; dually. Have not taken weight yet, but did with my 6.0 I had; I was under. After using it for fall camping and traveling, I am very pleased with it. There is a difference is performance from my 6.0, but I can live with a little less "umph". It handles the camper well, I have not put the boat on with it yet. I don't think there will be any issues.
