I talked with Mobil the other day and they told me that they have the new oil ready to ship out to retailers. so it shouldn't be long until its on the shelves.
I will post again when I see it, if you guys run across it at any stores, let us know, I can't wait to get my V10 on Mobil 1.
Andrew.
I was told not to use 30W oil, syn or not, by the dealer mech when I had it in there for my free oil change...(I brought him 5W30 Mobil 1) so he gave me the Motorcraft 20 weight syn blend as opposed to the bulk oil they usually do for free oil changes...
Anyhow, for what it's worth, it's one of the few times I heeded a dealership on anything like this...
And with good reason. The guy made a good point: the engineers who designed and understand the engine tolerances aren't getting a cent of profit from the required oil...so the logic is they must know something and it isn't related to lining their pockets on oil sales as I could get 5W20 from Autozone...
Chip
PS: Can't wait for Mobil 1 20 weight...I really like using pure syn in my motors...

Somewhere in the 2001 production run, the recommended oil was changed from 5W30 to 5W20. I saw in print (maybe the owners manual?) that if 5W20 isn't available, 5W30 can be used. This was during the time frame when the only type of 5W20 available was Motorcraft. As I understand it, no changes were made to the engines to require this new weight, but testing was finished and 5W20 showed a very slight increase in MPG's. FORD, like any other auto maker, will take all the help it can get to better their CAFE numbers. As a engineer myself, I can assure you that the best design never makes it into production. Designs are always challenged and compromised by trade-offs like cost, scheduling, and life-cycles to name a few.
The coversation probably went like this:
Management: "The test data shows a 1/10 MPG increase using 20 weight."
Engineering: "Yea, but how much extra wear is shown after towing at max GVW during 95 degree days?"
Testing: "An acceptable amount."
Accounting: "Besides, a 1/10th increase in MPG, multiplyed by the forcasted sales of 1.2 million units will boost our CAFE numbers enough that the Feds will only require one trip to Barbados to accept it this time."
Management: "So, we'll save money right?"
Accounting: "We ran the numbers, and showed a .05% increase in our profit margin."
Management: "And the EPA will give us a break, right?"
Page Ranking man: "Trust me."
Marketing: "And we'll be percieved as helping the enviorment by increasing our MPG's across the entire model line."
Engineering: "But this engine won't last as long running 20 weight."
Management: "Can you tell me, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that it will not last as long as our competitors motor?"
Engineering: "I don't know anything about their motor."
Managment: "I'll take that as a no. OK, 5W20 it is."
The above conversation is purely hypothetical, none of the events or persons actually ever happened, and no CEO's, CFO's, BMU's, BA's, MBE's, or PHD's were harmed in the discussion of this scenario. (Your mileage may vary)

And you know what, Homegrown...I'll bet that hypothetical conversation is very close to the truth...wish I had known that when I was talking to the mech at the dealer...
I did walk out scratching my head wondering how synthetic 30 weight could be so much thicker than blended 20 weight...synthetic is MADE to flow at most any temp...
Anyhow, looks like a moot point as Mobil 1 is going in my motor in 3K or so no matter what...
Thanks for the entertainment...and excellent perspective...I need to be more lucid when I'm listening to "authorities" like dealer mechs I guess...

Chip: The above conversation was based on a meeting I was involved in a while back. Different company, different products, different responses from the departments involved, but you get the idea - the short sided, bottom line corporate philosophy. Glad you enjoyed it, once I got up on the soapbox, I just couldn't stop. Would you believe I once had an engineering manager (his previous job was as a college prof in mechanical engineering) tell me "Engineering isn't about covering all of the details." My response was "If engineers don't, just who the hell will?"

I wouldn't hesitate to run Mobil 0W-30 in ANY gasser--be it a 9500RPM racer, or a sub-5000RPM truck engine. I can't think of many engines harder on oil than a 7500RPM turbo engine with no oil cooler (short of something like a nitro motor). Well, that was my wife's Grand National. I finally got off my (use your imagination) a couple years back & installed an oil temp gauge. Well, after a long, hi-speed highway run (~100 miles at 85-100MPH) on a 90-degree day, the oil temp was a staggering 298 degrees! We drove home (more slowly), changed the oil & filter, & my friend (works in a truck-repair shop) had the old oil (that had seen nearly 300 degrees) analysed: the verdict? This oil is still fine & hasn't broken down. We could've saved about $40 & kept that oil in the engine for the next 2600 miles.
Yes, the car now has an oil cooler.

Homegrown,
Love your post. Probably closer to the truth than anyone knows. Another reason they went to the 5w-20 is on the OH valve engines the 5w-20 oil got to the heads faster and prevented some cam failures they were having that were caused by lack of oil on cold starts.
They also changed the filters on some of the engines for the same reason. My 4 cylinder Escape's filter was changed after the Owners Manual was printed. The filter changed from FL400 to FL2005. The 2005 has an additional check valve or something simular to keep the oil from running out of the filter. The idea is to flow the oil as quickly as possible to the cam.
I agree with Homegrown, in the fact the major reason of the change is the 1/10 mpg increase received from the change. No reason to use the oil because of a better engine or closer tolerances. That comes from a Page Ranking group that doesn't understand lubercation. (not that I do)
Jim

Took 4.0 V6 Explorer in for first free oil./filter to the dealer purchased from. work order says they put 5-20 in.
Just fine with me, because I know it won't amount to a hill of beans(other than that slight increase in mileage) probably ever even if continually used, but especially for one change. Not that I would expect it anyway, but if and when I put some non 5-30 conventional or syn oil in there, and get a complaint from the dealer etc. on the engine warranty issue I don't forsee anyway, I'll have this record of them putting the non speced (with regards to viscosity)in.
PS. I have used an 0-5 aftermarket synthetic. No difference in what was known to be a consistant internal oil consumption rate, between it and Mobil 1 15-50 in 4 cyl engine with more than 200K miles.
