'02 6.8 liter V-10 question

For those of you who have any experience with this engine, how would you rate it? It's my understanding that somewhere in the '04 range they changed this engine, but the prices of a new one are beyond my means...well beyond.

I'm interested in the power, mileage, towing capabilities.

Are you happy with it? Would you buy another?

I'm looking at an '02 low mile model and would like some input. I've got a '97 Power Stroke now and not so sure I want another. Had my share of problems with it.

Thanks...

Re: '02 6.8 liter V-10 question

In 2001 the hp/tq numbers went up... they went to a 3 valve version in 2004-2005 sometime.

Re: '02 6.8 liter V-10 question

I've been impressed with my '00 V-10. Have averaged 12.5 mpg since I bought it new. Highway mileage is 14.5 or so empty. Pulling my 6x12 tandem axle enclosed cargo trailer which weights about 4000# I'll get 9.5 to 10 mpg depending on how fast I drive. Around town I get somewhere between 11 and 12mpg empty. 55,000 miles and no problem. If I could go back and change anything I'd get the 4.30 gears. Maybe that way it wouldn't be so quick to shift out of OD when cruising at 70 mph.

Re: '02 6.8 liter V-10 question

No real complaints here either. But since I don't tow much and if I knew the 5.4 would get even slightly better mileage I would go with a v8. But I bought mine used so there wasn't a choice. Same with the rear gear. i have a 3.73 and 315's so I could really use a 4.10 or better rear end with those tires.

truck is a 99.5 CC LB

Re: '02 6.8 liter V-10 question

I plan on keeping my truck at least another 5 years but if something unforseen were to happen (stolen, wreck, etc) I would buy another one in a minute. The only thing I might do different is get the 6-speed, but no complaints about the motor. This thing goes like stink, even with the 3.73s.

Ditto jstrauss for me. Love this thing. Plenty of go, silky smooth, virtually silent on the road.

My fuel log shows a 12.5 mpg lifetime avg, highest tank 16 something, lowest tank 10 something in nearly 30K miles.

Re: '02 6.8 liter V-10 question

I have an "old" V10, a 99.5 with a lowly 275hp/410ft. lbs. and 87,000 miles. Other than the IAC valve, the engine has been trouble-free. Does everything I ask of it. Of course, adding the Banks parts to it this year seemed to wake it up even more... I plan on keeping her at least another 6 years.

Re: '02 6.8 liter V-10 question

Thanks for the responses so far guys!

I was able to talk to the previous owner who told me that 11-12mpg was about the norm for this particular critter.

BTW, it has 4:30s and a 6 speed.

Re: '02 6.8 liter V-10 question

You guys are saying your getting 11 or 12 mpg pulling a trailor. Tell me why I cant get 11 empty? I use my v-10 every day pulling a lawn care trailor and I get about 7.5 mpg. I can get about 200 miles per tank. So whats going on?

Re: '02 6.8 liter V-10 question

nlc - What's your truck config? 2WD/4WD, long/short, rear end, etc. How heavy is it loaded? Is the plow on all the time? Miles on the motor, state of tune?

Driving habits are also a big factor with this motor. If you're prone to quick starts you can drive down your mpg considerably.

Where are you driving? Up and down steep hills will make a difference, too. Well, not down, but you can't go downhill forever.

The 99's didn't have quite the HP/TQ of the 2001's and up. Maybe you're kickin' the spurs harder than most....

Re: '02 6.8 liter V-10 question

Is your driving mostly city? Highway? Mixed? Most of the towing reports on here seem to be interstate based, which SHOULD be higher than city/mixed. There are so many factors involved... I used to get as high as 16 on the highway (documented repeatedly). Then I had an EGR go bad and while it was being repaired, the dealership reflashed it and it cost me almost 2 miles per gallon. What can you do...

Those numbers are really low. I've never gotten under 13 MPG
empty mixed driving and we have lots of hills and high elevation.
I do take it easy, but I'm not afraid to keep up with traffic.

[/ QUOTE ]My best guess would be because the configuration of the truck and the accessories. Crewcab, lariat, plow. That is a lot of weight right there.

Re: '02 6.8 liter V-10 question

Most of you are reporting outstanding numbers. Higher than I got in my F150 Screw 5.4l with 3.55 gears. Best it ever got was 15 unloaded on the interstate. Your bigger trucks with bigger motors and lower gears get better.
