1st Tow with V-10

Well, I bought the truck in November, but had the trailer in storage until yesterday when I pulled it out to clean it.

I previously pulled the trailer (~7500 lbs dry weight) with a 5.4L Expedition 4WD and it was too much for the Expedition. Adjusted the equalizer hitch according to specs (ball-height, etc.) and it sagged almost to the stops...the trailer is very heavy, including about 1300 lb tongue weight...yikes!

Anyhow, the truck rode perfectly level, pulled like a dream, and sorry PSD guys, it towed very strong with lots of acceleration! I was very impressed. I imagine though, the PSD would have pulled the paint off that trailer, I know the V-10 almost did!

Here, take a look, I'm like a proud daddy...

Re: 1st Tow with V-10

How far did you tow, and what was your gas mileage?

Re: 1st Tow with V-10

7,500 ? Heck, I've pulled that much on the interstate with my previous Toyota Tundra and it would maintain 70 mph all day long easy (non mountainess terrain of course) You need to get in the 12,000 lb range before I become interested.

Diesel has been so outrageously priced compared to regular gas for the past few months, that the 10 cyl gasser does seem tempting sometimes. But how will it pull 12K and what would the mpg be during the process ?

Re: 1st Tow with V-10

The V=10 is a strong engine especially with the Banks Power Pak. Had one in my lasT motorhome. Did get to spend considerable time with the engine in 3rd and some times second...screaming to pull a grade. Often wondered when the spark plugs would start to swapping holes. Could pass most everything except a gas station. Gross weight on the coach was 13,950# and we'd get 8 mpg on a good day running 65mph.

With the old PSD, we run almost up to 20,000# gross combined weight and we get 10 to 12 mpg running 65 mph.

The V-10 is sweet for a gasser, but sure is thirsty.

Re: 1st Tow with V-10

Well, here is my towing comparison. Current rig(see signature) weighs out at 19500lbs GCVW. Previous rig was a '01 Dodge Ram 3/4 diesel/auto/4.10axle/power chip with a 29' fifth wheel with a GCVW of 16500lbs. So I am weighing about 3000lbs more now than before. The first obvious thing was the mileage difference. The dodge got about 11-12 towing and the Ford is getting less than 8. Usually around 6-7MPG. I try to drive around 65-70MPH as much as possible. The Dodge maintained speeds in the big hills much better than the V10. The V10 however, is more pleasant to drive in that even if you need to put the pedal to the metal to climb some of the higher hills, it just seems to run smoother if that makes any sense. Now I will also say that before I put the power chip on the Cummins, it thought it sucked when it came to climbing any type of hill.
If it wasnt for the mileage thing, I would say I am very happy with both the towing the daily driving of the V10 over the diesel. Now I also know I am comparing a Ford to a Dodge and not one engine to another. I just need to accept the mileage thing and get on with it. I am pretty sure I wouldnt want a 3.73 axle pulling that kind of weight. I wish I could push a button and go to 3.73 axle for empty running on highway and in cities!!

Re: 1st Tow with V-10

I do not think the V-10 was ever rated best for giving the BEST mileage..

Re: 1st Tow with V-10

I agree you dont buy a V10 if you are looking for great mileage. When I did the research prior to buying it, I thought based on various posts, to expect around11-12 in town and maybe 9-10 towing. Well, I found out later that is if you get the 3.73 axle, not the 4.10. So I am still in the attitude adjusting phase. Otherwise, I like the truck but I will say that if I did alot of towing and not just weekends and vacations, that the diesel would definately be the way to go.

Re: 1st Tow with V-10

Ahh, Vailman, that wasn't smoke coming off your roof, that was snow blowing off it!!

I agree about not buying the truck for gas mileage and that's exactly what I tell my friends who tease me about it being a gas guzzler. I knew it would be going in to it, but then again, the PSD is a gas guzzler (pardon the expression, guys) when compared to a Honda Accord. It's all in what you want out of the vehicle.

Anyhow, this wasn't a post to get the gas vs. PSD thing going (there's already enough of that, and I think I've started my fair share... )...I was just posting to say how suprised I was at how much tow power this truck has...and no, I haven't been able to compare it to a diesel, but I already know the numbers...to include the extra $$ for the engine and the fuel cost at the pump!

I'll be making my first "real" cross country tow when I take it to northern Michigan to my sister's cottage near Higgins Lake. Looking forward to the week vacation this August...

Stay at it, guys...gas or diesel, these trucks are far superior to the competition...I know a little about that, I had a '95 diesel Tahoe that was nothing but trouble!

Re: 1st Tow with V-10

Give it up. You are never going to get the oil burning crowd to acknowledge a gasser. They'll jump every thread like this one.

But here's an interesting bit of info- in stock form, if you do the math with transmission ratios, rear axles, tire sizes etc. and figure out rear wheel torque at highway speeds from both the V-10 and the 7.3, you might be surprised at the answer.
I never bothered with the 6.0, so I don't know how it would fare.

I figure I'll be first to the destination... I can pass the 10 at the gas station, and pass the 6.0 at the rest stop while he's complaining about his truck.

Re: 1st Tow with V-10

I just towed a load up to the Adirondacks last weekend and did not have to stop at all for fuel. The load was about 12,000 and the truck about 10,600. When I arrived there I still had slightly under a quater tank left. Fuel capacity is 34 gallons. I'd like to see the V10 do that.

The dodge got about 11-12 towing and the Ford is getting less than 8. Usually around 6-7MPG. I try to drive around 65-70MPH as much as possible.

[/ QUOTE ]

Just for another data point, my V10 has the Banks power pak and the tornado gas thing in the intake. I have a '99 V10 CC 4x4 with 4.3 ratio. I pull a 14,000 lb 5th wheel. Solo milage around town is 12.5 to 13.5. Towing from California to Montreal averaged 8.1 mpg. For a gasser, I guess it's OK. But, I'll be getting the 6.0 in 2005.

Re: 1st Tow with V-10

I bought the V10 for hauling our slide-in truck camper. It's a light one (1500 lbs. dry), but I'm consistently getting 12 MPG at 65-70 MPH highway with the camper on the truck. That's in the mountains of New Mexico. Under ideal conditions (semi-flat highway, no wind) I get 13 MPG hauling the camper. I don't drive it in the city.

We live at 7000 feet and I run regular fuel with no pinging and plenty of power. I'm real happy with the truck, and am glad to have that $5,000 savings over the diesel in the bank.

Re: 1st Tow with V-10

I towed 10,000 pounds with my 7,500 pound (w/cap) V10 dually for 700 miles from Indy to New Jersey with only 1 stop for gas. I got 10 mpg which is only about 1 to 1.5 mpg less than I get unloaded. I had plenty of power, and 80-85+ was easily maintainable, even through the hilly PA turnpike.

The best part was I was actually able to carry on a conversation with the passenger and needed no Advil because the V10 was so quiet, and the only smoke we saw was in the rear view mirror coming from the powerstrokes.

I have 90K miles on the truck so far and besides a leaky axle seal, the only other repair so far has been 2 sets of brake pads. The engine is still humming like it's brand new, and I drive the piss out of this thing every day. My friends say I should stop trying to drive it like my Porsche. Through all this abuse, it still has the original rotors after 90K miles, and they are still well within spec. Let's see a diesel do that!!!!!
