2002 F250 Intermittent Start issues? Help!!

Hey Everyone,

I'm having some issues with my 2002 F250 CC SB with the 5.4L....

It starts intermittently, when I turn the key to start it, all gauges come on, lights and radio work, but nothing turns over, not even a crank over or anything. I throw my charger on it and in a few minutes, (literally like 2 or 3 minutes and it fires right up)

It has a brand new, week old Interstate battery in it, so I know that the battery is good, it usually starts when its warmer out like 15 above or warmer, but today it was about 10 degrees out and it wouldnt start.

so is it the altenator, starter, or solenoid?

The closest shop is 75 miles away ( disadvantage of living in Alaska) so I was hoping someone could give me a lead or two on where to start...

Any help, thoughts or ideas would be appreciated...

Thanks,
Adam

You can check the solenoid by jumping it with a screwdriver. Just leave the key in the on position and if it fires up you have a bad solenoid.

If you jump the solenoid and nothing happens I would move to the starter. On some models there is another solenoid on the starter.

Putting the charger on for a few min shouldn't make it start. You may have some bad connections on your battery terminals.

Good Luck

My brother ran into a similar electrical issue with a friends '99.5 5.4 SD. He had to pull the battery and battery box out of the truck. There was a fusible link approximately 1 foot from the positive battery cable that was corroded. He replaced or repaired the link and the truck is performing like it should.
