Considering getting an'08 F250 SC 4x4 Gas engined truck. Just trying to decide on whether to go with the 5.4L V8 or the 6.8L V10 engine.
I plow snow commercially in the winter, and tow a 10000lb boat in the summer. Other than this it's used for daily transport to and from work.
I've had a couple of '05 F250's with the 5.4L engine, both plowed great and towed well also and were both equipped with the 3.73 LS rear end.
I don't know the exact cost of the V10 upgrade to the 5.4L V8 but I don't think it's all that much. I'm also wondering about fuel mileage as the majority of my driving is to and from work. Plowing snow during the winter and towing on the weekends in the summer that the sun is out are not that often.
Thoughts?
Thanks,
Sean

When I ordered my 05 I first opted for the 5.4. However I changed my order to a V10 for only $600. The V10 is an ok motor, but I dont know where the 362HP are... I would say even though you tow up to 10000 pounds the 5.4 would be ok. Im sure everybody has different mileage, but my truck with the torqshift, 4:10 avg around 9-10 mpg. Typically 350 miles on 38 gallon tank..
My personal opinion is that the 5.4 is a GREAT motor for anything smaller than a F-250.
There's not going to be that much difference in fuel economy, because you're going to need to work the 5.4 harder to get it to do thesame things as the V-10. My 99 V-10 F-250 SC short box w/ an auto got 12m/g period. With the small tank, I was always looking for fuel - legs were about 300 - 350 on fumes.
I understand the V-10 gets a little better now.

Either one is a good motor the 05 in my sig has the 5.4 and we just ordered an 08 identical to the 05. Key for us is the 4.10 rear end. These trucks are used on a ranch and have bulk feeders and hayforks for hauling round bales all winter. We also pull hay trailers horse trailers etc. year round with them and they pull good. All of our places are within 20 miles of each other so not much extended highway driving so they fit what we need. The 05 gets 12 to 14 pretty easy don't know what real hwy would be.

I have an 06 V-10. Love the motor. Motor gets stronger after about 7000 miles. At the time, upgrade from the 5.4 to the V-10 was only $600. MPG is not the best, but when I pull my 7500lb trailer, the V-10 does not work that hard.
mileage will be a little less than the 5.4, i get 11-13 unloaded consistantly and i record it at every fillup
towing 5-12k the worst i have ever gotten was 9mpg
jus tlike mustang mike and many other people i have talked to on fte my v10 "woke up" around 150 hrs 7k miles...the difference in powert is very noticable...i think ford governs the motor for break in or something, its kind of a shame but it definitly feels like 362 horspower now
i love my smooth silent power

I first bought a V10 for my 1999 F250. Since I have a bobcat and a boat I thought this would be the best way to go. Remember this is the US--bigger is better. In 2003 I bought a GMC with a 8.1. That engine was realllllly strong-- much more than the V10. Now with the new designed 2008 F250's I ordered another V10. This supposedly has more horsepower. Will it be better than the 8.1--we'll see.
I must say that the 1999 V10 was really good and gave me no problems in the 55000 miles I ran it.
By the way, retail on the V10 is $600---dealer invoice is $498. So what's another $500 on a $40,000+ truck?
I have to agree with the V10 waking up at around 7000 miles. It was like night and day. Mine would walk away from my buddies 6.0 chevy, but I cant say how it would do against the 8.1. I also have a duramax and they diesel can take the 10 in the quarter mile easy stock for stock.
The newer Superduties are a very heavy truck. IMHO , the larger models like mine are under engined with a 5.4
The V10 is a hoot to drive and makes a big SD feel light and nimble.
I am hoping the new 6.4 PSD is a winner like the 7.3s were.
Go V10 for a sure thing, go 6.4 for a leap of faith but leave the 5.4 for the F150 crowd.

Yea, I think the horsepower was right around 300. Supposedly from what I have read the new V10's have considerably more---although I'm not sure what it is.
