I am about to order a '01 250 SC SB V10/Auto 4x4 and will be replacing the stock tires with 33's as soon as I get it. Should I order the 4.30 gears or will the 3.73's pull it OK?
I have been reading this forum for a couple of months and I think its GREAT!! I have learned alot from everyone here. Thanks in advance!
Had mine for a week now. Put the BFG's on the second night and it runs like CRAZY ! My old '80 Bronco had the 351M and it never even dreamt of this kind of power or speed. I took it up a mountain canyon on Sunday and it didn't even feel the incline or altitude. I would say go for the 4.30 and you might lose a MPG but will be amazed at the performance........Just my .02 though.
I just put on some 285 BFG's which are 33" tall, and they seem to work just fine with the 3.73 gears. I could not notice any difference in acceleration when moving to the slightly taller tire. I am happy with my decision to go with the 3.73's since I drive 75 MPH all the time.
Unless you are doing some seriously heavy towing, or are going to 34-35" tires, the 3.73's are a better choice for every day driving in my opinion.

I went with the 4.3's as well (running 35's).
If you are going to be doing any pulling, I would suggest the 4.3's, most people around here don't regret getting them over the 3.73's

I've run the 4.30's with 35's and now 37's. Part of the reason I went with the 37's was to bring the RPM's down. I dont do a lot of heavy towing, so I like the lower RPM's now. It seamed to rev too much for me. It had more low end acceleration with the 35's but, it still flys...it just takes a little longer to get there.
I went with 4.3s since I knew I was going to put on 37s (which makes my effective gear ratio about 3.6). Since I had hardly heard of a gear ratio before I looked at the options sheet, I searched the site for every mention of gears. It looked like the vast majority of those with 35s preferred the 4.3 over 3.73 (and most of the dissenters had merely ordered the 3.73s without thinking about it beforehand, or so it could be assumed!). 33s might be on the bubble, since your effective gear ratio will still be over 4.0 and you are going with the auto tranny, which gives you less flexibility in your shifting RPMs. I think the decision is akin to going with a V10 over the V8. Although a lot of people buy the V8 and it would work fine for most of us, I think the majority would prefer the V10. Perhaps you go with the 4.3 and if the gearing seems too low, just put on bigger tires .
