460 vs. 351 bellhousing

I hope I'm not out of line in asking, but let's go back a few years. Are the bellhousing bolt patterns the same for the 460 and 351W ? I need to make a tranny swap.

no. 351M has the same pattern,(except for a few built in 1973) but 351C and 351W have the small-block pattern.

I'll agree with Whd507, the 351 and 302 were both small blocks, and had the same pattern but the 460 was a big block. Sorry

Actually, the 351M showed up in '75. Based on the same "high block" as the 400. Yes, they do share bellhousings with the 385 engine family.

Re: 460 vs. 351 bellhousing

I am not sure how the 351 junk works, but I can say for sure that the 460 is one alone in the bell housing pattern. At least this was true in the 1988 model 460. Hope all is well, Mason

As far as the 1988 full-size trucks are concerned, the 460 would indeed have an exclusive bell housing bolt pattern or bellhousing. The 300 six, 302 and 351W were indeed different. But in the overall scheme of things in the Ford family of engines, the 351M, 400, 429, and 460 all shared the same bolt pattern on the back of the block. Unless, of course, you wound up with a super top secret prototype!!

Cheers

Re: 460 vs. 351 bellhousing

Thanks for the info, I was not sure how the 351 thing worked, because I hate 351's and carburators, so I guess I am unusual. Agian thanks for the info, it is apreciated, Mason
