thankz guys ,is there any easy way to tell for sure(# on pan etc)? I have heard that the 4r70 is fairly week,so I guess I hope for the 4r100 for that reason...
I wouldn't say it was "weak". I went off-roading with others at an Expedition ralley and my '97 4.6L/w4R70W was the only one that didn't have to get a new transmission afterwards. The '98, '99, & '00 trucks all had the 5.4L & E4OD/4R100 combo.
Yes there is an easy way to tell. On the door sticker on the drivers side and under the abreviation "TRANS" is a letter. Either "U" for the 4R70W or an "E" for the 4R100.
