5.4 Excursion Oil Consumption

I'm researching an Excursion for the Fire Department and have found a likely candidate. It has the 5.4 gas motor with about 55,000 miles on it. I haven't seen the truck, but our Chief Engineer looked it over and it looks to be in good condition. His only concern was that on start-up he felt there was a noticable amount of oil smoke. It cleared up, and wasn't present during a road test. Sounds like valve seals/guides to me, and probably not worth worrying about, but I wondered if theres anything else more sinister we should be concerned about.
Thanks for any input

Gregg

Re: 5.4 Excursion Oil Consumption

Gee Dick... very usful post! Notice he owns a PSD so I suspect he knows what you know...

They are spending Fire Department money and the question is about a 5.4L gas motor hence he posted down here.

The Blue puff on start up is fairly common on a gas motor of the 5.4L 6.8L modular family that has been sitting for a day or two. This is not usually an indicator of excessive oil usage. There are no serious maintenance or reliability issues with either gas motor.

Plug blow out on the Aluminum head is a very rare occurance but none the less a reality. If your department buys the used vehicle I highly recommend a plug cahnge with the new plugs professionally set to the correct torque of 168 inch pounds or 14 foot pounds.
