Just wondering how good the 5.4 triton v8s are in the super duties, specifically 2000 model year. What kind of power and fuel mileage are to be expected, and what problems are these engines known to have.
You know I really can't vouch for them in trucks, but I have seen many in Cargo/15 passenger vans with well over 200K miles on the ticker. My brother's company has three cargo vans, two fords and a cheby. The two fords are over 170K and they have had zero problems, they are on their second chevy after replacing the first one just shy of 95K. No blown motor or anything, but the Chevy was nickel and diming them with little things.

That's been the way of Chevies for as long as I can remember.
I have the V10 in mine so cannot help you directly but my wife's 00 Expedition has the 5.4L with 110K miles and it runs great, will suck the headlights out of my SD, and gets 5000 miles to a quart of oil. It does about 14-15MPG in town and has done as well as 19 on the highway.

How much less would the mileage be in a truck? Also, if you put the tranny shifter in 2 (for second gear, of course), will it start and stay in second gear, or will it start in first and only go as far as second?
I take it the front ends of these trucks are pretty reliable, since they're solid axle and leaf springs.
Sorry for all the questions, I'm a Chevy guy, but not too pleased with their current offerings as far as gas engines and I can't afford a Duramax. Thanks

This truck I'm looking at has plain jane mirrors, not the good towing mirrors. How hard and expensive would it be to switch to the good factory towing mirrors, maybe even the new ones with the lights?

I own a 5.4 Ford F-250 CC SWB that my wife drives. She just refused to drive a diesel, so we bought the gasser. The only thing I worry about are the aluminum heads. At the rate we use her truck, it will take about 11 years to get to 100K miles, which is the recommended mileage for new plugs.
If any of the plugs strip out, it's gonna' cost a ton of dough. I may just let her drive it 10 years and trade it in.......
Otherwise, we've been happy with ours. Mileage is 11-12 around town, 14 on the road at 60 MPH; I drive the speed limit. I'm okay with the cost to operate it because I wanted a lot of weight around Momma for safety.....and she also said no to the Peterbilt.....
I've driven a lot of miles on gasoline Ford engines and I've never had any mechanical problems with the engines. I also never buy a new engine in the year it first comes out.

I pull horses with both a 5.4 and a 6.8. The 5.4 is not down that much on power, but the milage is no better either. I average 9.5 pulling a 3 horse Featherlite with the 5.4.
I have a 2002 with the 5.4L and so far I have right at 16,000 miles. I get about 10 MPG in town and 12 MPG on the hiway. So far so good with mine
I had a 2000 F-150 with a 5.4. A simple, gutty, reliable engine. Ford has a real winner in the 5.4.
I recollect getting up to 15-16 MPG with it, mostly highway. But that was a lighter and more aero truck than the Superduties are. They've got all of the aerodynamics of a brick. ;-)

Running about 70-75 mph , 90% hwy , motorcraft 5/20 oil . in a E350 15 pass van 2002 . Last time I checked I got 16 mpg ! Which suprised me . I thought 14 @ best.
I have a 5.4 in my 2000 F-150 Super Cab 4x4 and I love that engine, the only trouble that it has given me in 103,000 plus miles is one bad coil. I have a super chip installed in it and it use to be my full time tow rig, until I got the truck in my sig, now it's a part time tow rig that my dad uses mostly, but all in all it is a good reliable strong engine with impressive low end torque for 330 Cubic Inches. I have never rode in or drove a V-10 so I can't comment on those.

Love that engine. I had a '97 f-150 with the 5.4 that I sold last year with just over 120K miles. Never leaked oil, never burned oil, and the only engine-related repair I ever had was replacing O2 sensors. I would classify it as VERY reliable...

Ford has a winner with these engines. Our 97 F-150 with the 4.6 (same engine really, just a shorter stroke) is going strong with no indication that it is about to cross 100k.

My brother has a 2001 F-250 regular cab long box 4x4 with 4.10 ratios. 15 mpg is pretty common with that truck and no trailer. He towed my brother's Chevy on a tandem gooseneck (26') and economy was around 10-12 mpg. As far as I am concerned that is a great motor. He has the 5sp. ZF and that thing will pull. It's not as fast as my 6.0 Diesel, but it leaks a hole lot less, spends less time at the dealer (none since he bought it), and just seems to go. As long as he's had it its been as reliable as my 300 I-6. It has towed some of the same stuff on the farm and has never complained. If you want speed the V-10 should not be overlooked, though.
