Thinking of getting a 03 standard cab (2dr) dually with the 5.4 6spd, I haul nothing but me, just like the dually thing, just wondering about the mileage difference, and any other free advice on options etc.
Well, to start with, you will almost definately have to special order it. I'll bet there is not a single DRW 5.4 6spd reg. cab in the entire US. Once you actually get it, it will definately be one-of-a-kind. If you don't haul anything the 5.4 should be plenty of motor, especially with a reg. cab and 6spd. I wouldn't even guess what kind of mileage you should expect. If it was me, I'd definately look hard at the V10 or PSD. If you ever decide to trade or sell, it might be hard to unload the V8. I doubt that set-up is in great demand.
P.S. I went to college at ASU and loved it. I miss West TX. Friendliest people in the world.

Yep, it will be a special order, no biggy. You raise some good points about resale. You think the V10 will sell better down the road? A $600 option for the 10, not a biggy, just curious about the mileage. Origionally from Austin, work in San Angelo
If you are only gonna get 14mpg out of the V8, spend the $600-$700 and get the V10. You'll be glad you did when those "special" situations arise!!
Get a v-10 w/ 3.73 rear...should be within 1 MPG of a 5.4 w/ 4.10...plus more towing power when you need it...

No doubt. Most people who want a dually will haul some heavy loads with it. As others have suggested, the V10 would be the better choice, resale-wise. If you drive enough, or just have enough money, the PSD would be an even better choice, IMO. If and when you decide to sell it there would likely be several buyers looking for a pickup to pull their company trailer. The diesel is very appealing to that group. I'm not trying to steer you away from the V10, just giving my $.02.
Have you driven a truck configured like this? A short (relatively) wheelbase one-ton dually? Empty most of the time? I agree it will be a cool looking truck. But let's be honest, that thing's going to beat you to death. You might be able to soften the ride a bit by severly underinflating the tires, but it will always be ROUGH. The spring stack on the rear is going to make you think the axle is bolted directly to the frame. You'll quickly find that the "good" parking spaces are now off-limits and you have to walk from the outer limits of every parking lot in town. And those fenders sticking out over the extra rear wheels will keep you out of a lot of the drive-thru's and parking garages. I'll step off my soapbox now. By all means, get the truck you want. But be sure you've thought through everything so that once you've committed your $$$, you enjoy the ride. That said, I've averaged 12.5mpg over the first 30k miles with my V-10 and 3.73's.

I'm a big fan of the 5.4
But in a dually I'd have to say get the V-10
the Mileage is almost the same
And in the V-10 you get the bigger radiator
and tighter torque converter
And not to mention a engine that can pull or haul every bit that them dual wheels can handle
And you would be able to sell it
