Back in early October I order a 2001 F-250 SD CC 4x4 with a 5.4 v-8. I was wondering what anyone could tell me about their rigs. I don't see many on the road. I'm a bit worried about the v-8. I don't know how it will perform. I got the 3.73 rear-end. Anybody? Power? Performance? Towing? Gas mileage?

I've got a '99 F250 4x4 CC SB with the 5.4. You should have no problems with this setup. I've only got the 235hp I think yours will have 260HP?? I got the V8 because it is my daily driver, wanted the CC for the space and still be able to pull a 22foot ski boat(Nautique V-drive) to the lake on the weekends. It's perfect for that. So is the V10. If you use your truck for work, heavy pulling, big loads in the bed, long distance pulls, I would probably go with the V10 or Diesel for sure. I average about 12.5mpg everywhere in town. Have seen best of 14.5mpg on the highway and about 9-10mpg pulling the boat. Hint -- just get the big mirrors and they'll think your a Big Dog!!!!
I just got mine last Friday!!! I think it is slightly underpowered, I wish I would have got the diesel, but since the pocket book would not live with that decision, I opted for the 5.4. Plus I knew that I didn't need the V-10 and wanted to help my mileage. I will be able to live with it without any problems. I think that it would feel better with an auto trans. But I prefer manuals, and I guess that once I get used the clutch, I will be fine. I don't think towing will be any problem at all. I can't say too much about gas mileage, I am only on my second tank. The dealer filled the first one up and I did not want to trust that it was full(the mileage # might have disapointed me)
Geeze..... I sound like a yuppie complaining that my 8000# truck does not accelerate and handle like a Porchse and get the mileage of an escort.
If you are just driving with it, everything should be peachy! I see a lot of landscaping companies using the 5.4 CC to tow around enclosed trailers and 4 people on a daily basis, so it must be addequate for the task.
If you ordered in Oct, you should still have time to switch the gears(if you want, I am not trying to convince you of it).
I know where you are, I have been there! You will be happy with your truck, these beasts are awesome!! It's amazing how fewer people try to cut you off when your in such a big vehicle!

I'm pretty happy with my 250 w/ the 5.4 -- see signature for configuration. Here are links to relevant discussions.

My dad's V-10 gets better mileage than my 5.4. The 4.10 ratio is a must with the 5.4 unless you live in the flatlands. I was in a hurry to get the company truck at a cheap price (23K), so I should have got the V-10 for the $500 and ordered one. Others can back me up that the V-10 gets better mileage. Maybe you can take back the truck. CO state law gives us 5 days. The resale will suck with the 5.4.

I have the V10 4.30ls 5sp, and I get 12 in town and 14 on the highway. Towing 4000 lbs, got 12 on the highway. And it will tow anything! Haven't been stuck in the snow yet either (in Colorado), but do loose some power at the high altitudes. Good luck.
I've got a 5.4L and I love it( see signature for specs). You're going to have to travel a very long way from Livonia before you will begin to miss a 4.10 ratio. The engine has plenty of power and a much better midrange than my old 4.0L OHV Explorer engine (and that's with a lot more weight).
I hate to see people start disparaging other engine options but as long as we're doing it... V-10 uses more gas, has a history of piston slap, and fewer aftermarket stuff is made for it (now). There are plenty of places to find headers, cat-backs, reusable filter systems, throttle bodies, stacks, etc. if you feel you need more power. You can always throw on a Navigator 32 valve head!
Don't start hating it before you give it a chance.
Okay, thanks for all the replies guys! I'm a little nervous about the 3.73 axle now though. I'll probably occasionally tow 4000 lb trailer or a load of wood in the bed.
Any complaints about road noise or quality?
Thanks again, I really appreciate it.

From what you describe, I think you'll be ok with the 5.4L. Others claim that the V10 gets better mpg's than the 5.4L. The only time this is true is if your towing or hauling heavy loads.
On the average, 2 similar trucks (v10+3.73 vs 5.4L+4.10) the 5.4L will get slightly better mpg's. The one with the 5.4L is not as fast as the V10, but its not underpowered by any means either..
I have no problems keeping up with traffic whether its travelling on the highway in the WVA mountains, or stoplight to stoplight in the city.. (Although the 5sp shifts a little clunky compared to my little Ford Ranger).
Someone else mentioned that maybe the 5.4L would feel better if he had an automatic.. Nah, I drove both. (5.4L + auto, and my 5.4L with 5sp). The auto tranny costs about 1.5 to 2mpgs, and likes to shift more often than I prefer, (although it is smoooth). I prefer a manual tranny anyway so it was an easy choice for me.
The average mpg in the first year I've owned the truck, which is mostly mixed city/highway driving is 15.5mpg.
Without going on and on, My Dad's SC 4x4 V-10 auto with 4.3 axles gets better mileage than my reg cab 5.4 auto unloaded. His first tank was better than mine @10K miles. The 5 speed was what I would have liked better with the 5.4. If you get a 4x2, then it may be more liveable. In fact, you might as well get an F-150 with the 7700# pkg. The 5.4 has had a worse history with piston slap at one time...

I had a 1999 set up the same as the one you have ordered. I put 40,000 miles on it in 2 years, these are my observations. The fuel economy will be 12-12.5 mpg driving to and from work and around town.It will get almost 16 freeway.I have a slide-in camper and a bass-boat that we like to take all over the state(Washington)and, well, it struggled some going up the pass.I went with K&N, Flowmaster and a BBK throttle body, it all helped a bit, but it was just not the vehicle to do what I wanted it to do.If you plan on larger wheels and tires, 4.10 is a must. I have to say that for a small displacement(my opion)V-8,it did pull all I had, but it had to be in 2nd gear a lot with the engine really working, and the fuel economy dropped to 8 with camper and boat.Pulling the same equipment, my current F-350 PSD DRW will climb at 65mph, in OD with throttle to spare, where the F-250 5.4 needed to be in 2nd gear, wound flat out,and pushing almost 45 mph.We got big hills out here,I just ran out of truck for the toys I strarted to aquire. In summary:It'll do it, but not real well.
