It's about time for that first oil change and I'll be damned if I can find 5W-20 anywhere. Where are you guys going for your oil? Any particular brands recommended or discouraged? I'd prefer to use Mobil One (always heard that's the best) but I'm not sure if they make this blend.
BTW it's a 2001 V10, and I thought the 5W-30 I used in my old toyota in the winter was thin.

Just bought a case today- Motorcraft super premium 5w-20 from my local Ford dealer, $1.91 @ case.Friends of mine that are Ford techs all say to stick with the 5-20.Until now, I have always used Mobil 1,but I think I will use the Motorcraft at least for now.
I'm glad I got a 2000 Superduty as it recommends 5w-30 which is much more available than the 5w-20..
I don't think there were any changes to the engines between 2000 and 2001, so if you can't find 5w-20 I think you would be safe with 5w-30.
I know, the very next post here will say that this will void the warranty.. But I believe in case of an engine problem the burden will fall on Ford to prove that the engine failure was due to a failure of the oil.. The same rules apply with aftermarket parts, they can't void the warranty if the aftermarket part did not contribute to the failure.
It has been stated on www.f150online.com that in the event of an engine failure, Ford is ordering an oil analysis. Failure to use the correct oil "has" been used to deny warranty coverage. Rumors, speculation, BS... you decide.
My thoughts-
Ford has placed a specification on the type of oil used- not the brand. Thus, failure to use oil meeting the Ford specifications can cause problems making a warranty claim. As more vehicle manufacturers specify this weight of oil, it will become more readily available. Since I doubt Ford actually refines petroleum, someone has to be making it for them already. The problem is getting Wally-world, Autozone, et al. to carry the weights we need. Have you asked any of the "managers" at these places to stock 5W20 for you?
When I was calling around looking, I told the guy at autozone that this was the weight recommended for all new Ford V10's and possibly other size gas engines and he indicated he may start ordering it. Do the V8's run 5W-20 also?
While I'm sure the dealer here has it, I talked to Napa today and they said they stock Valvoline in that weight at $1.50/qt, not bad. I've just got to get down there tomorrow get it (I really hope they weren't mixing it up w/ 5W-30).

All the Ford Fx50 gasoline engines require the new weight oil- including the V6. I've read that many (if not all) of the cars also require this weight now, too.
I bought a case of Motorcraft 5W-20 at my local Walmart for 15.12 or 1.25 per quart. Granted it was the only case I found in the store and it was on the top shelf. However, I would think that it could be ordered from your local Walmart as it apparently is in their distribution system. You may want to ask the store mgr (I don't have a lot of confidence with the store clerks regarding special order requests) about ordering it given that it is now needed for most new Fords. You may want to bring your owner's manual in with you to show the mgr to further incent them to carry it.
Just my thoughts....

Well, I ended up getting the Valvoline from Napa. They said they'd just started stocking it a week ago and only had 1 case, so I bought the whole thing.
I've been asking around about Mobil One but haven't been able to find it. Hopefully as more stores start to stock this weight it'll show up.
I believe Honda is recommending this blend as well in their 2001's.

I just purchased both a new 2001 F350 SD V10 and a 2001 Explorer. I am confused by the
5-20W oil as well. All the older V10's required 5-30W. The 4.0 V6 in the Explorer requires 5-30W. It's interesting to note that the Explorer 5.0 V8 (optional engine) which is a very old design and used to use 10-30W now requires 5-20W. What gives? Me thinks FORD has other motives that don't envolve my trucks? I think both my new vechicles will have to get used to 5-30W!
If you guys want GOOD synthetic oil checkout the sites above. NEO, REDLINE and ROYAL PURPLE are all excellant choices. Theres probrably more out there, but this is all i found in a short time. Remember they're not cheap!!
Now let me figure this out, you buy a 01 gasser and Ford says use 5-20, but 00 gassers use 5-30.
I guess since the V-10, 5.4 and 4.6 are same basics, they will all require 5-20...???
Any Ford techs listening? I think I smell a RAT in the Ford wood pile.
If this is true, I"d sure like to hear the "Ford Story" on this...
TR
What I did notice when I saw the 5w-20 thing in the manual was a statement with it: For best mileage use of 5w-20 is recommended. or something like that. Made me wonder if there are some environmental reasons behind it. When they come up with mileage #'s for vehicles, they do everything they can to make the #'s as pretty as they can. I think thats why all terrain tires are pretty whimpy, to keep mileage #'s up. Even though the MPG reporting is not required on these, it still may be the reason??
almost forgot.... I went with the 5w-20 oil, motorcraft brand along with the motorcraft filters from Wallmart both seemed pretty reasonable. Same deal as above, only was one case on the shelves, so I bought it and two filters. After my second change I plan to go back and get more(or have it ordered). I figure I will do what they tell me, then I don't have a thing to worry about.

I thought vehicles that are over 8500lb gross vehicle weight, the manufacturer is not required to include these vehicles in the overall CAFE ratings? Can someone please clarify?
While Ford has not made any external changes to the 2001 engines, they may have made tolerance changes in the bottom end of the motor requring a different oil. That is the only reason I can see why Ford would make a change if the above is correct.
