Are you guys running the oem home brew in the V-10's.
I just filled this message box with new greetings----and it didn't go, cause I forgot to fill out the subject line.....
I'm a pecker?-- typer, so this is slow for me. Great forum, I'll talk more later.
I have done an informal interview with some local parts stores that are chains. Advance auto stores carries only Havoline in 5w-20 $1.24 ea./ Wal-mart carries only Motorcraft (synth-blend) $1.77 ea. / Napa auto stores carries Valvoline all climate $1.74 ea. That’s all I have been able to find around here. I go with the Motorcraft since I feel the synthetic blend is just a little more protection than the non-synthetic blends. I would like to go with Mobil1 but from my recent conversation with them (yesterday) they have no plans to come out with one soon. Amsoil would be OK to but I like to buy qts. a couple a week to spread the cost and that gets hard to do with the Amsoil. And I feel more comfortable with an oil I can get most anywhere at any time. Also another reason for the Motorcraft at this time.

I use 5W-30 Mobil 1 in mine...but then again, I've got a 2000 that calls for the 5W-30 instead of the 5W-20. I'd tell you just to run 5W-30 because it's easier to find and you have more variety (and that's what I'd do if it were me), but many people here that are much more truck smart than me will tell you otherwise.
Take care.

Personally, if it were mine, I'd run a 30w in there. Amsoil does have a 5w-20, and so do a few others. Mobil one is actually just over a 20w anyway. It's a very thin 30w.
Actually, the 20w oil thing was just to meet emmissions and fuel requirements. If you looked closely at the specs of all the 20ws, and what Ford set in place, you'd see that the oil is a 20w for about as long as it took you to get in in the engine. IOWs, after you run it a bit, it will naturally thicken ever so slightly, and it will cross the line to a 30w.
If any of you doing oil sampling on a 20w, you'd see the results come back as a 30w oil.

Au contraire: The MotoCrap oil is 100% petro based, no synthetic. I'm surpised Mr. Riley let that one go over the plate.
Checker carries the Penzoil 5w-20, I believe AutoZone does too.
I'm still on my first fill of 5w-20 Amsoil XL-7500, so the jury is still sequestered.

Bright red bottle says "Synthetic Blend". I guess a single drop of synthetic anything would constitute a blend, though.
Checker here in UT has Castrol GTX in 5-W20. I just bought a case (12 bottles) for 18 bucks. They just started selling it a few days before I bought it. They also had the pensoil their too.

Actually wasn't sure. I hadn't seen the bottle in a few months and couldn't remember.

That red bottle must be new. All the MC oil I have seen in Wally World and dealers is in black bottles, all petro. You are right on the blends, seems they apply "Jim Crow" law to oil products.

Ford is also recommending 5w-20 oils as most of their engines are OHC designs. They are concerned about getting oil pumped up to the valvetrain quickly after startup and while the engine is warming up. As a general rule, thick oils don't work well in overhead cam engines, particularly ones with tight tolerances. This is also one reason why GM recommends 5w-30 synthetics for the "LT-1" Corvette engine.
The best Mobil 1 grade to use is probably their 0w-30 synthetic - it will pump easier than their 5w-30 and 10w-30 and brackets the 5w-20 recommendation. The Amsoil 0w-30 is also their best oil to run in this motor, at 2-3 times the normal drain interval.
