I heard a rumor that Ford is going to make 5w-20w oil retroactive to 2000 Superduties V8 and V10, like the new 2001's. Has anyone else heard this? Is there any difference in the motors anyway

NoMo,
I am going to run the 5w-30w too until it is an official change by Ford, its just that my oil change company tells me that you will get better fuel mileage (less friction) and your oil seals will last longer with the lower weight oil. But like you, I don't want to give them any warranty excuses by using the "wrong" oil until THEY make it official

Ford TSB # 01-04-07 addresses making 'retro' the recommendation for 5w-20 oil in Triton engines for all years, V8 and V10, among other engine sizes. The reason seems to be for better fuel economy (a hot topic in this forum!)
I'm using Mobil 1 and I haven't seen 5w-20 grade yet. I've read opinions that Mobil 1 will find a place to leak and its use will cause the engine to use oil, but I've had good luck so far through 9k miles and three oil changes.

I understand from talking to Amsoil tech services that they are coming out with a API licensed, 5w-20 full synthetic in the next month or two. I would expect the price to be in the range of $5.00/qt, plus shipping.
Outpost22, I found it on the Ford Insiders Web site. I accessed this site with the disc I received in the mail after my Excursion purchase. It has the service manual and wiring diagrams along with service bulletins and recalls for the vehicle, on-line.
I was going to post a link, but when the web page with the bulletin comes up, it doesn't show the address. I'm sure you can ask your dealer to see it.

Thanks for the information guys! Looks like 5W20 really isn't required, just "recommended" for the pre-2001 models. Until supplies/brands/choices get better, I think I'll stick to the Mobil 1 5W30.
I'll keep running 5w-30 full synthetic. Anyone that has ever drained the MotorCraft 5w-20 knows that stuff reeks. Call me finicky, but oil shouldn't smell like a feed-lot, after only 1000 miles.
Just my .02

Hey guys!
I called my dealers service department (Mock Ford in Grants Pass, Oregon) today and they said go ahead and run the 5w-20w in the 2000 V10 as that is what they understand to be right and that's what THEY are putting in the 2000's (I didn't ask about 1999 but assume that also is true as it's in the TSB)
So, next change I'll give it a try.

I'm sure there is nothing wrong with running the 5W20. Just waiting for some more options other than Motorcraft dino lube. With Ford trucks being so popular, I doubt it takes long for the oil companies to start cranking out the new weights.
I recently read an SAE paper published by Honda on the topic of 0w-20/5w-20 motor oils. As far as I could tell, the only benefit was a fuel savings of 1.5%, compared to running a 5w-30. I would still use a 0w-30 synthetic over a 5w-20 petroleum oil in this application. Ford can claim a corporate fuel savings by going this route.
BTW, there was no difference in wear protection between the 0w-20 and 5w-30 petroleum oils in this study.
