91 F-350 fuel pump location?

OK,

I know it's an oldie but my boss has an old 91 dually broke down in the boonies and I have been chosen to go get it. As far as I can tell it's got good spark and cranks over like usual. Where is the fuel pump on these trucks?

A side note,It backfired several times before it died which is strange for a fuel pump going out right? I didn't get a chance to pull the dist cap off and see if maybe the distributor broke or something, can that happen? I checked for fire at the coil, not at the plug wires. Does the end cam gear have a tendency to strip out? distributor shaft?(I put a new one in 3 or 4 years ago)

Thanks for any help!

Re: 91 F-350 fuel pump location?

The fuel pumps are inside the tanks. Ford calls them an FDU, I think, and it is a unit containing two pumps (a high pressure one to feed the engine, and a venturi pump to pull fule from the tank and feed the high pressure one) as well as check valve, etc. Both the feed and returns lines go into this unit, and it has the sending unit also mounted to it.

Re: 91 F-350 fuel pump location?

thanks for the reply,

I was thinking for a while that I offended the almighty V-10 cult for a while here, not a murmur, so wrapped up in their V10 vs. PSD thread. Anyhow, I got out there and found it was getting plenty of fuel and spark. Spun the distributor around a bit and got it to pop a few times and decided it had jumped time. Got it towed to my shop and pulled it apart and the chain was loose but had not jumped? I was somewhat dissapointed!! Put it all back together and decided to pull the plugs, it took a 3 ft cheater bar to get them out! Suspect now that it had been severely overheated and checked the coolant that I had gotten out of it, about 2 gallons! Also 3 qts low on oil! The bubba driving it said the guage never showed hot but I know if you run them out of water the guage sometimes won't even register, needless to say he is on my s*** list!

Haven't got it all back together yet but think it got so hot that it fried the spark plugs, is that possible??
