97 V10 vs 02 V10

Found a great deal on a 1997 XLT van. Has 28500 miles looks great and has all the towing options.

I heard FOMOCO increased power in the V10 after 1999, is this true?

Reason I ask is that I tow a 29' travel trailer weighing 7500# from time to time. From reading past postings, I should not have a problem. Is the more powerful V10 worth me getting a 2002 model? Both vehicles are vans.

Thanks to all for the responses on my Chevy question! I am glad I have a few Ford vans to choose from.

Re: 97 V10 vs 02 V10

The V10 HP & torque ratings were increased from 275 & 410 to 310 & 425, effective with the 2000 MY (I believe).

Can this increase be considered as significant or modest? I would like to think I could still travel at reasonable speeds on, both on straight, flat and up the mountainside. Are the pre 2000 V10s dogs compared to post 2000 V10s?

While the "newer" V10 has a 15% power upgrade from the "older" V10, I would be hard pressed saying any truck/van in this category with 275 h.p. would be a "dog". Do you know which rear end it has in it? A 4.30 will make it pull the hills better.

If you're into pure h.p., then get a new one, but other than that just buy it and have fun.

P.S. I believe this is my 500th post, still a "newbie" by this boards standards...NoMo are you listening?

Outpost22,

Thanks for the word regarding the rear diff upgrade/mod. I was not considering that. I am working hard to talking myself in to $30K of debt.
