Advice on buying new V-10 super duty?

Hey everybody, I'm from the "noisy" super duty side and have a few questions about these trucks w/ the V-10. I've got a friend who would like to buy one, but he's a chevy guy and he is concerned about problems so I thought I would go right to the guys who would know! SO,-
-What have been the major problems and satisfactions with these trucks with the V-10's? Thanks in advance.

Re: Advice on buying new V-10 super duty?

15,600 miles on mine and zero problems so far. The V-10 has plenty of power and will pretty much pull anything you want to pull, but it will suck down some gas while doing it. I think gas mileage has been the biggest complaint from anybody (and the dreaded flutter if you're unfortunate enough to have that...which I don't). I average about 11.5 to 12 mpg doing my every day driving and anywhere from 13.5 to 15 on the highway depending on conditions. I almost always run empty.

My biggest piece of advice is to tell him to go drive one.

Re: Advice on buying new V-10 super duty?

The V10 has been one of the bright points on my truck! Only problem so far was the idle air control failing under warranty. 35k and no other engine problems. Good power, quick response, and the fuel mileage is good if you're coming from another gasser. Had an auto tranny fail, but that seems to happen more often on the PSD. If he doesn't NEED the PSD, he'll be very happy with the 10.

Re: Advice on buying new V-10 super duty?

From the posts here, it looks like the only widespread issue with operation is the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve. Out of two V10s, I've been lucky enough to NOT have a problem- yet.

On the flutter issue, my first truck had it bad!! But, I don't consider it to be a functional problem with the V10. More of an embarrasing/annoying thing.

Re: Advice on buying new V-10 super duty?

Also chalk up one Idle air control valve, non motor issues one power steering pump, one steering stabilizer. That is it. Truck is 2-years old and has almost 17,000 miles on it. Mileage in town short trips 9-10, highway 13-15 running 72-mph....

Re: Advice on buying new V-10 super duty?

12,700 miles, and 14 months later with 2 long (2500 mile) trips with the camper..not one trip to the dealer

Mileage is 11.0-12.5 mpg in town and variable on highway (10.5-12.0 with loaded camper and higher mpg when empty).

I do have a mild "flutter" exhaust, but no big deal and certainly NOT fatal

P.S. my buddy has the IDENTICAL truck with 17,000 miles and has the same results

Re: Advice on buying new V-10 super duty?

The first V-10 my truck had only logged 14 miles before it blew up....The second one has been great with 13,000 miles so far.

Re: Advice on buying new V-10 super duty?

I am brand new to this site but feel I can give some viable input. I have been the Parts and Service Director Here (Ken Grody Ford) for over two years and have Only seen one failure so far with a V-10. The other posts are dead on about the fuel milage to. Good power but thirsty.
