Which Alarm System?

Hey guys,

I just got my new V10 CC 4x4 Lariat on Saturday and I wanted to start thinking about what alarm system I should install. I'm not opposed to spending some $cash$ on a good system as long as it's high quality. I don't need a remote starter, pager or a proximity sensor, but I would like something that provides the best overall protection, has a long-range transmitter and offers the choice between passive and active arming modes.

Any opinions would be welcome. I'd love to hear your experiences with the various products on the market as I've been out of this sort of thing for a few years now.

Thanks,

-Mike

Re: Which Alarm System?

There has been been quite a bit of discussion on alarms here so you might want to try a search. Here's a recent thread with some info on vipers. I posted some comments about my Compustar alarm, but I think it is an active-arm system only and it doesn't include a sensor for the rear window (maybe you could wire the "trunk" sensor to the rear window, however). Although the remote start on a gasser is merely a gadget (and a fun one at that), I really like the paging function. A loud car alarm hardly attracts attention these days, so I like being told if my alarm gets tripped. Just my $0.02.

Re: Which Alarm System?

Hi Mike, welcome to the site! Hope you have fun with your new truck!

This has been discussed before - an "Upgrades and Aftermarket" forum search on alarm will reveal lots of hits with great info.

I have a Viper ESP 550, which is an alarm and remote start combined. Don't know all the tech details but it does what I need it to - protect the truck, remotely start so it's cool when I get in, etc - my truck lives outside. The website is www.dei.com

I bought the Viper thru Circuit City and they installed it, as then it comes with a lifetime warranty and I can take it into any branch to get fixed if it goes faulty, etc.

Hope this helps! Merry Xmas! Keith.

Added on edit: The range on my alarm remote is not good - probably about 200ft. Supposedly you can add a long range option. I migh do this by summer.
