alarm system?

I've been reading that guys are putting in new alarm systems in their SD'S. My Lariat comes with an alarm system built in. Is it considered junk? Or are you guys just looking for a better system? I don't know anything about these alarms, except how to turn it on and off...(ignorance is bliss). So...what types have you put in your SD and what are the advantages over the stock one? Thanks...

Re: alarm system?

Do you have a "real" alarm or just the remote entry with key fob? There are no factory installed alarms. If you have a "real" one, then the dealer installed it. May want to ask what brand they installed.

Since the SDs don't come with any kind of protection (like PATS), I've been considering one of the Cyclops relays. May not be a real alarm, but should keep the amateurs from taking the whole truck.

Re: alarm system?

NoMo
I have just the keyless entry "alarm". Have no idea if it's good for anything other than "button pushing"? What DOES it do? (just a door opening alarm?) Is it worthless? Any ideas?

Re: alarm system?

The factory keyless entry system is only that -- keyless entry (plus it turns on the dome light and you can sound the horn on demand). It's not an alarm system.

I upgraded my keyless entry system to a full alarm system by installing a the Ford System 4 alarm. This cost about $150 for the parts (not installed). This alarm system comes with a 125 dB siron, status LED, shock sensor, starter kill, door monitoring and valet mode. It will also disable the starter automatically if you forget to arm the system.

These are all the features I really wanted in an alarm, so I upgraded relatively inexpensively. There are many other alarms on the market you can use as well, but I don't think they will integrate with your factory keyless entry system. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

If you do the intall yourself, I can help you find the right wiring.

Re: alarm system?

It's like Pio said-
The remote entry system does nothing but lock/unlock the doors without the key. Even this "feature" doesn't work when the engine is on. If you lock the doors & the truck is running, you better have another key!

When you first push the fob's "lock" button, the doors will lock. Push the button again, the horn will beep once and the lights will blink one time to let you know the doors were already locked.

Pushing the "panic" button will cause horn & light activity until the panic button is pushed a second time. This is more of a personal protection system to draw attention to your area if you are being threatened. Also works pretty good for locating the truck in a crowded lot or annoying the neighbors at 4am!

Re: alarm system?

I once posted a bunch of links to other alarm threads here. That might be a good place to start when thinking about which alarm you might want to install. Good luck.
