For all you 5spd transmission guys

Does anyone have any complaints about their 5spd? here is the scoop. My dad bought a 2000 F250 sc short bed 4x4 5.4 3.73 axle(not limited slip), manual hubs, and the 5 spd. He complained about the transmission being really clunky and loud when shifting, and I drove it and it did seem quite loud and clunky. You really have to baby it to not make it clunk when shifting. He went so far as to have the Ford dealer replace the thing under warranty, because they thought it was noisy too. the new one does the same thing. My truck makes nowhere near as much noise. Does anyone have any problems or complaints similar to this one. If you don't, and like your transmission I'd like to hear too. Thanks
Nick.
(I'm trying to get my dad to get on here but he is still quite computer illiterate.)

Re: For all you 5spd transmission guys

The 5sp's definately are not 'sports car' trannys.
I have 20K on my truck. It took me a few hundred miles to used to shifting it smoothly, but even at its smoothest, it is a bit noisy.

1st->2nd: a. I hardly ever even use 1st gear as its a real creeper.. It's really hard to get a non-clunking shift between 1-2.

2nd->3rd: tiny bit of clunk every once in a while. If your speed is right, and if you use the right amount of force (not too much, not too little) it is pretty smooth.
This shift feels 'notchy' but theres no driveline clunking unless you mess up the shift.

3rd->4th: Not as notchy, no clunk
4th->5th: Not as notchy, no clunk

I've heard others report that the notchyness (is that a word?) can be reduced some by switching to a good synthetic tranny oil.. I might try this at around 25k miles.

Re: For all you 5spd transmission guys

I like my 5spd. The noise does not seem excessive to me. No cluncks or anything like that. Shifting requires a little more effort than a car, notchier (as you put it), but I write that off as a truck thing. All trucks I have driven seem to prefer slower shifts. The only complaint I have is in cold weather, shifting is difficult until the fluid warms up a little.
