Am I nuts for considering F250 with V10???

Guys looking for some information on the V10 F250. I currently have an 06 F150 super crew, 4x4. It's had a few problems and I have it sold to a friend if I buy a new truck. I love the looks of the 08 F250s and like the diesel but I don't tow heavy and the truck is pretty much my daily driver. So I'm thinking maybe go with the V10 and that way I get the looks but not the extra maintenance and cost of diesel. So what do you think?

I currently get around 13 to 15 in my F150 all around driving and highway is usually running around 70mph. I do a lot of highway driving on the weekend so not sure but the diesel might be better for that.

Thanks

Where do you live (how high up)? Hills or mountains?

You say it'll be a daily driver, how many miles a day? You're not going to tow heavy (how about frequency or at all)? Do you have a camper, trailer, boat in your near future?

Do you need a Crewcab Pickup truck?

There are allot of factors that go into the purchase of any vehicle, and economy & usage are two biggies. The diesel will shine as a towing / hauling unit in altitude and mountainous terrain. The gasser will probably do "better" in lower, flatter areas. The pickup truck is no doubt a very versatile vehicle, but you pay for it in economy, gas or diesel.

One of the things I like about the diesel is its better use of biofuels. Bio diesel is about 35% more efficient than ethanol, and all around a superior fuel for the environment & economy.

I know its hard to compare older truck with new ones, but my 99 V-10 got 12, and my 03 6.0 gets 17.5 in the same conditions. From reading, I gather the newer V-10 is seeing about 14 & the new 08 6.4 is seeing about 15.

You will get better fuel mileage with the v10 than in your F-150. I get 12 in the city with a big lift and tires and all I did for gains was a power programmer. I love my V10

Why would you NOT buy the diesel? More power, loads more torque, easier to beef up the motor, better fuel milage, bio-diesel or vegistroke option, better resale value... seems like a no-brainer to me

Only thing bad about the diesel over the gas is 1.00 more per gallon for fuel and if it ever goes down, you better have deep pockets to get it fixed. I have had both, and I dont pull anything but a bass boat and I will have nothing but the V10 now.

that is true... if it breaks, be prepared to break out the wallet with a vengance... and price of diesel does suck

Thanks for the input guys I'm still trying to decide which way to go. I figure later this month or even September they will be offering some good deals on new trucks be it V10s or diesels. I would like the diesel but the price of fuel right now and the reliability problems is what's keeping me from jumping on one.

Thanks again

It will be more expensive to fix once it breaks, but how many guys around here still have diesels with 2 or 300k miles on them? Alot. It's really up to you. I don't see why you don't consider the 5.4 if your not going to haul at all though. It definitely gets the best mileage.

I would not consider the 5.4L in an F250. I have one in my F150 and it's a dog. I can only imagine what it would be like in an F250 that weighs more then my 150. Now in 09 when the F150 comes with a 6 speed auto it might be better.

I can tell you right now. The V10 gets better mileage than the 5.4 when you are comparing F-250's. Especially the newer V10's. As far as reliabilty I trust the gas burner over the diesel, but that is my opinion. There are alot of trucks out there with over
200k, diesels and gas burners, so that should not influence your decision. the questions is, why get a diesel if you are never really going to use it.

Just to say again, again, that my 2008 V-10 with the 4.10 rear, tows just fine, even in the mountains. I towed heavy, with an overloaded 16 ft. tandum trailer, for over 1000 miles, no problems. I averaged 9.8 mpg for the entire trip. You can't go wrong with the V-10, but I would stay away from the 3.73 and go with the 4.10 or 4.33. The factory snow plow option for $85 is a lot for the money; larger tranny cooler, larger radiator, larger front springs and HD shocks. Also, the new Torque Shift tranny with tow/haul is fantastic.

I think he's taking about the difference in milege between a 5.4 and a 6.8 in an F-250/350. I doubt that you would see much difference in mileage between the two, but there would be alot of difference in the power. My wife has a Lincoln LT with the 5.4 and 3.73, and she gets 16-19 mpg(with a Superchip on premium), wile my V-10, 4.10, F-250 gets 10-12 mpg(with a Diablosport on medium), which I think is fairly normal. Just my take.

Two of my buddies have F-250's with 5.4L in them. They get the same mileage I do and they have no lift on thier trucks. When mine was bone stock I was getting about 16mpg and they are getting about 14 or 15.
