I drove a rental 2008 f-250 with 5.4 and the thing barely had enough power to haul itself up a hill with a light load. IMO the only logical choices for super duty are diesel or V-10. These trucks are far too heavy for a standard gas V-8.

Buy a used 7.3 or a late 6.0. They can be had for a song. The V-10 will be dead and long forgotten and the diesel will still be going strong. If you don't keep vehicles, buy the gasser, but if you want over 150,000 miles with your truck, diesel is the only way. And in the end your truck may still have some value. Try that with the V-10, and even worse with the 5.4. Just my $.02!

I was curious what the break in period is for this vehicle and what you guys are averaging for MPG. I read about what people were getting on the 250 and was curious if there was a drastic difference with the F350 model.
I currently am getting 8.5mpg. I do notice sometimes that I will drive 6 miles to work and i will drop about 10 miles on my miles to empty. When i got the truck it was reading about 5.2MPG but has since went up to 8.5.

I have never heard that before. Mine is an 03 and lifted and I get way better than that. I average in the city about 10.5 to 11mpg. I can tell you this. I put on the hypertech powerprogrammer and instantly got 2mpg!!! If I had not seen it with my own eyes I would have never though it would have made that much difference.

The last time i checked the V10 was a $600 option. IMO you would be a fool to get the 5.4 in a 250-350 unless it was a reg cab that NEVER got used to tow. The best milege i have seen out of a 5.4 f250 4x4 w 373 gears was 15. and what a dog! And look at the price of a diesel. What? they cost you like 6500 up front. and the best i have heard is 13MPG. what a joke. I dont think i would take a 6.4 if it was free. I would get a V10 4.10 w the torqueshift. They are 365HP!!!!!!

What Diesel Brad said. I've had my 2008 V-10 with 4.10 rear and torqueshift tranny for over a year and it is looking like the best truck I've ever owned...and that's saying something. It's the most under-rated HD truck out there IMHO.

My mom drives a 00' excursion with a V10 it has an 8'' lift with 38 claws. We lifted it the second day we got it in January of 2000. It has 235k miles, the only thing that we have done to it is a tranny at 140k. Putting 4:10 gears in it helped it alot. Still running strong even with a lead foot driver. not to put down 6.0L which there are 4 of them in my family. Wy dad's 06 as soon it turnes 100k it went to S*** Turbo, Injectors ,fuel pump and a injector oil pump or something like that it has cost over $ 8,000 to keep it on the road.

The 7.3s and 6.0s are already dead and forgotten.
My '99 V10 has close to 190,000 miles on it, without having any extensive maintenance done. I've witnessed '99-'04 V10 fleet vehicles with over 400k on thier original V10s.
Most electric and other utility companies are going or have gone to gas engines due to the reliability and less fuel costs.

I have had a v10 cc 4x4 work truck that I absolutely loved. It wasn't as quick or as powerful as the psd but it was like clock work 9-11 mpg. I had a 5.4 that was a 2wd reg cab that was a dog. It seriously sounded like it had a stall converter milage was about the same but for a lighter truck it had noticably less power. I currently have a chevy with the 6.0. And it by far is the best it runs great and loaded it still runs good for a gas engine I would go chevy 6.0.... The only reason I wouldn't buy a chevy gasser is if it was a 4x4. I am not a fan of ifs I can't seem to keep them aligned

nobody calls a 2000 v10 a dog...
nobody calls the 460 a dog... it's in your mind.
unless you tow heavy, the v10 is wasted gas...
my 5.4 will put my truck sideways. the v10 has it's place,, imo not in a passenger vehicle hauling groceries or golf clubs
im guessing around a wet corner right? jk
the numbers are there.... it sounds good on paper. a guy i work with has a 05 f150 and pulled a deer blind to his lease and was said it did fairly well. he constantly complains about the lack of "balls" the truck has though. the work truck i had did the job it was designed to do. dont fool your self though it wasnt a v10 or a psd. i would skip the 5.4 if it was me

Wellll,, I have the 6spd so I can get it going pretty good.. I guess that's kinda cheating but, the point remains it goes like hell.
I suspect the auto may suck some juice out of the motor. I driven several f150's and they seem a little less peppy.
these motors were made to wind up though not lug like the diesels. (i've had both). when towing. don't expect half throttle to give the same result in the psd as the 5.4. she needs to rev. diffrent powerband.
If someone prefers the v10 or psd that's cool I just get sick of everyone sayin' the 5.4 is a dog.. it's at dam near at the same #'s as the early v10
mileage wise??? well I consistently get 16.5-17 mpg all highway. I carry 1000lb roughly (tools,nails,screws,etc.) I know a v10 won't get 17 mpg empty.
Towing? well I give the nod to the v10 for med-heavy towing probably get better mileage and pull better too.
However, being that most superduty owners aren't even near capacity and rarely ever will be, the v10 seems wasteful.
More like a status symbol than something that a person needs because the 5.4 is a pos.
