Another 4.3 gear question

Please clarify...

If one has the 4.3 gear and installs taller than stock tires (but not much larger) like 285s, the rpms will go down due to the gear ratio going up (maybe to a 4.10 or 4.20), will this allow for a touch better fuel economy like some argue the 3.73 will get over the 4.3? Or will the added weight of the slightly larger tires negate any (theoretically realized gains) of the higher ratio?
I realize the SD is not a fuel efficient vehicle, but...I like to think every bit counts.
Maybe this is an exercise in futility?

Does the V10's fuel economy act like the PSD's in that the PSD seems to maximize mileage under 2000 rpms? Is there a "sweet spot" in the rpm range where the V10 appears to shine in mileage? At least consistant around 12-14 mpg empty highway driving (for arguements sake)?

Cheers!
Dan

Re: Another 4.3 gear question

When I increased tire size to 35" tires, my mileage stayed the same, 10.5mpg average. Obviously mileage depends on many factors, but for the same type of driving, the pros and cons of the bigger tires canceled out for me.

Re: Another 4.3 gear question

Consistent 12-14 mpg highway shouldn't be a problem, unless you drive really fast. I haven't seen much difference between 4.30 and 3.73 mileage. The rpm difference is only a couple hundred at cruise. Obviously, more rpm requires more fuel, but the thing that really makes a difference in mileage is speed. These trucks have the aerodynamics of a brick and the faster you go, the more fuel you need to push that brick through the air. I can get almost 14 at 55mph and it'll drop to 12 at 70mph. With my camper loaded, it's much more pronounced because then I'm 12 feet tall, which is a really big brick to push.

Re: Another 4.3 gear question

Actually, the difference is 400 rpm at 65 mph. 2000/2400, 3.73/4.30. The 3.73 runs at 2600 in 3rd at 65.

I checked out the difference when I ordered my Excursion. I went with the 3.73 because my towing is lighter than rated, and I don't tow all the time.

I'm second guessing my choice though, because I've really been loading her down. I also believe that the mileage difference is minimal.
